Box Score PORTSMOUTH, Ohio – Campbellsville University women's soccer came into the match against Shawnee State University without losing a game for over a month. The Lady Tigers followed suit and extended their winning streak to six games with a 5-2 win over the Lady Bears on Saturday, Oct. 19.
On a cold, rainy day Campbellsville used five goals on five assists to win its fifth Mid-South Conference game of the year. It's the first six-game winning streak since 2011 and the second in the Jones' career at CU.
The passing was exceptional on the day and Coach Thom Jones mentioned in-game adjustments that the weather forced him to make.
"The weather made us change our game plan on offense," said Jones. "We adjusted our play to our targets' feet and they were able to lay it off to the outside forwards."
CU started to apply pressure to the Lady Bear defense off corner kicks, much like it did against Kentucky Wesleyan College on Thursday night.
The Lady Tigers were awarded consecutive corner kicks and Bailey McDonough placed them perfectly inside the box. Mhairi Fyfe attempted one shot but was saved by SSU's Emily Kuehn.
On the next corner kick Kuehn wasn't so lucky as Kathryn Thomas came free in the box and kicked in her second career goal off the assist from McDonough.
It didn't take Campbellsville long to extend its lead as Alysen Shireman's shot was saved by Kuehn but the ball bounced right to Aris Kuntz who used a nifty pass to Ralph to make it 2-0 with 11 minutes left in the first half.
Shawnee State got on the board late in the half as Teresa Welch came away with the ball and pushed her shot past Brandie Hagerman to give the Lady Bears their first goal, also, on a corner kick.
Campbellsville came out with a 2-1 lead after half-time but Shawnee State came out swinging in the early stages of the second period.
Hagerman came up big as the Lady Bears started to find holes in the CU defense but could not get anything past the 10-time MSC Player of the Week. Hagerman finished the game with four saves.
The Lady Tigers extended their lead in the 60th minute as Fyfe scored her 10th goal on the year on a pass into the box from Rachel Veatch. Campbellsville now led 3-1 but they were not finished. Fyfe and Ralph remain tied for the team lead with 10 goals each.
Five minutes later, Fyfe returned the favor as she passed to a breaking Veatch and gave Campbellsville a 4-1 lead.
After SSU's Welch scored her second goal on the day, Campbellsville answered with another late goal by Kuntz in the final minute of play on the assist from McDonough.
"We struggled clearing the ball and marking up today," Jones said. "They scored both of their goals on unmarked corner kicks. We have to do better and come out with better defense against St. Catherine."
Campbellsville's offense was too much for the Shawnee State to handle as CU outshot the Lady Bears 21-12, with 14 of those on goal.
Fyfe, Veatch and Kuntz led CU with one goal and one assist apiece, making it the first time three players have recorded a goal and assist in the same game in the Thom Jones era.
Campbellsville extends its record to 9-3-1 on the year and 5-2 in the Mid-South Conference. The Lady Tigers will travel to St. Catherine College on Tuesday, Oct. 22 for their final road game of the regular season. Game time is set for 2 p.m. EDT.
Campbellsville will return home on Saturday, Oct. 26 for senior night against Bryan College.
