Lady Tigers shut out Rio Grande on Homecoming

Box Score

CAMPBELLSVILLE, Ky. – After a week off from competition, Campbellsville Lady Tiger soccer (6-3-1) returned home for homecoming and played in grand fashion as the Lady Tigers burned the nets for three goals in each half and beat University of Rio Grande, 6-0.

It all started in the ninth minute as freshman Hannah Harris out ran the RedStorm defense and took a shot outside the 18-yard box. Harris' shot flew past the goalkeeper, Allison Keeney for her first goal of her young career.

"That's a great confidence booster for Hannah, said Coach Thom Jones. "She has worked so hard all year, and it's starting to show."

The Lady Tigers came out firing on all cylinders as the ball was staying on the RedStorm side of the field most of the first half. Mhairi Fyfe and Aris Kuntz both came out with early shots on goal but Keeney saved both.

Keeney wasn't as lucky on the next shot as Harris got one by her.

The shots kept coming for the Lady Tigers. Campbellsville started to capitalize on 14 total shots in the first half.

Fyfe came back in the 20th minute and scored her fifth goal on the year and extended the Lady Tiger lead to 2-0.

Senior, Toria Alsip added some insurance before half time as she scored her first goal on the year and seventh of her career.

Campbellsville went into halftime with a 3-0 lead but the fireworks were just getting warmed up as CU came out in the second half with their foot on the gas pedal.

Senior captain Jessica Ralph scored her first goal of the game in the 52nd minute of the game on an assist from Chelsea Gill. Ralph's second goal came just 11 minutes after that. She and two other Lady Tigers had a break away, three-on-one attack, and Ralph who is CU's all-time goals leader, knew exactly what to do.

"We have changed our formation a little bit," said Jones. "We went to a 3-4-2-1 and that helped boast our already aggressive offense attack."

Campbellsville wasn't done though. Fyfe scored her second goal of the game in the 66th minute. This is Fyfe's second game of the year with multiple goals and her composure and toughness has stood out for the Lady Tigers.

"Vas (Mhairi) brings a lot of energy to the field and brings some creativity to the offense," said Jones.

Campbellsville has another full week off before they take on University of Pikeville in the third double header of the year with the men's team.

"Sometimes it's good to have the extra week," says Jones. "We needed it after the Georgetown and Bluefield games. But sometimes it can hinder us when we come out like we did tonight. We will give the girls a day of extra rest before we get back at it and prepare for Pikeville."

The Lady Tigers now move to 6-3-1 on the year and are on their first winning streak of the season.

"I am very pleased with how the team played tonight," said Jones. "We won the 50-50 balls and that led to our offensive attack. We played up to our capabilities tonight and it shows by the score. We will be very tough to beat if we keep this up."

Campbellsville will play Pikeville next Saturday, Oct. 12 and are looking to build off the momentum they gained the previous three games. The last meeting between the Lady Tigers and Lady Bears came in 2012 when Campbellsville squeaked out a 1-0 victory. Game time next Saturday is set for 6 p.m.
