CAMPBELLSVILLE, Ky. – Campbellsville women's basketball took its undefeated record to the court tonight against Oakland City University, looking to start the season 4-0 for the first time since the 2009-10. CU dominated on the offensive boards and scored 20 second-chance points to outscore the Lady Oaks, 94-49.
"This is another good win for us.," said Lady Tiger head coach Ginger Colvin. "A lot of times you get sloppy when there are a lot of substitutions but everyone contributed and stayed focused in the different lineups we threw on the court."
CU came out on a 22-5 run to begin the game and the Lady Tigers never looked back. Katie Allen led Campbellsville and scored all of her nine points in the first half. Madison Clements was right behind Allen as she was perfect from the floor, pitching in two 3-point baskets and three 2-point field goals. Her last score in the half rattled in while time expired and gave CU a 49-24 lead.
Campbellsville came out of the locker room and went on another huge run to start the second half, scoring 29 points compared to Oakland City's 11.
Although the scoreboard showed CU dominated the scoring aspect, the difference tonight was the post play for both teams. Oakland City's tallest player stood at 5-foot-10 and was the Lady Oaks only threat in the paint. Campbellsville, on the other hand, had six players stand 5-foot-10 or taller.
Campbellsville used its much bigger forwards to crash the boards and not allow any second-chance points for the Lady Oaks. CU recorded 56 rebounds while Oakland City only had 31.
"We rebounded really well tonight," said Colvin. "That has been a major focus for us all season long and we are starting to come along."
Outside of the rebounding differential, the Lady Tigers also used 23 assists compared to the Lady Oak's 11. Every point guard for CU had at least four passes leading to buckets with Ellen Sholtes and LeeAnn Grider leading the way with five apiece. Allen was the other guard with four assists.
Daizah Kimberland took advantage of the unselfish play and led the Lady Tigers on offense with 12 points, six coming in each half. She also grabbed seven rebounds, which was tied for the team lead with Mary Jehlik.
Campbellsville had five scorers in double figures for its third game in four tries.
Lindey Young (11), Lindsey Burd (10) Madison Clements (10), and Mary Jehlik (10) all finished with at least 10 points.
Every Lady Tiger that was dressed got into the game tonight and all but one scored. Campbellsville has played all of its 14 players in three of the four games to start the season, which is the first time in the Ginger Colvin era.
With players gaining valuable minutes for CU early in the season, Colvin is looking for a payoff when March roles around.
"We have tremendous depth," said Colvin. "There are scorers all over the court and we are getting better each and every day. Our post play stepped up big tonight and we will need that performance from them all year."
Campbellsville used 10 different variations of lineups and gave Colvin and assistant coach Miranda Denney something to work off of for the upcoming conference matchups.
CU scored 94 points against Oakland City, which is the third game the Lady Tigers have eclipsed the 90-point mark.
The explosive offense for Campbellsville is averaging 101.2 points through its first four games.
Although CU dominated in the offensive categories, the Lady Tigers forced 23 turnovers and held Oakland City to 32 percent shooting from the floor. That is the lowest percentage Campbellsville has held a team all year.
Although CU led in every statistical category, Oakland City did take advantage with its smaller team and pushed the ball up and down the court for the majority of the night. Hope Marigny and Brooke Jackson both led the Lady Oaks in scoring with 12 points apiece. Jackson led Oakland City behind the 3-point line while shooting 2-for-3. Kolbi Edens also chipped in two three-point buckets in the second half.
With the win, CU extends its record to 4-0 and a perfect 6-0 over Oakland City University.
Campbellsville will now have six days in-between its next game, and will open Mid-South Conference play with a women's-men's double-header. CU plays Bluefield College on Thursday, Nov. 21 with the Lady Tigers tipping off at 6 p.m.
"We have some big games coming up," said Colvin. "We are looking forward to seeing how we fair against conference opponents."
