WILLIAMSBURG, Ky. – Ten Tigers, attached or unattached, placed in the Top 6 for their weight Saturday to open the 2013-14 wrestling season at the University of the Cumberlands' Patriot Open.
Sophomore Treyvontay Rhodes led Campbellsville University's seven attached wrestlers with a runner-up finish to Cumberland University's Kirk Johnson at 165 pounds. Rhodes collected an 8-1 decision in his first match, and then recored a 17-6 major decision and third-period pin to advance to the championship match. Johnson edged Rhodes, 5-3, in the final.
Other attached wrestlers who placed in the Top 6 were Joe Whalen Travis McIntosh (fourth, 184 pounds), (fifth, 157 pounds) and Ryu Ballard (sixth, 141 pounds).
Sam Conners (149), Miguel Santis (197) and Justin Sampson (heavyweight) also competed as an attached wrestler for CU.
Freshman heavyweight Justin McDaniel led Campbellsville University's nine unattached wrestlers with a runner-up finish to Kevin Malone of University of Tennessee-Chattanooga. McDaniel had a 12-1 major in his first bought and then posted a 6-1 win over Middle Tennessee State University's Taylor Padony. McDaniel faced teammate Terrell Moore, who was also unattached, in the semifinal and advanced with a 4-0 decision. Moore, who had a pin and decision in the winner's bracket, went on to finish fifth after being pinned by University of the Cumberlands' Courtney Freeman and then beating Jonathan Hupp, 2-1.
Drew Ferguson also finished runner-up as an unattached grappler at 133 pounds, falling to UTC's Mike Pongracz, 3-0.
Other unattached wrestlers to place in the Top 6 were Gabe McIlrath (fourth, 157 pounds), Chase Boone (fifth, 125 pounds), Justin Brown (fifth, 165 pounds) and Shelby Floyd (sixth, 157 pounds).
Also competing unattached were CU wrestlers Terry Harris (157) and Brandon Pledger (174).
Campbellsville will open its duals schedule Nov. 9 at Central Baptist University.
