CAMPBELLSVILLE, Ky. – Fourth-ranked Campbellsville University men's wrestling hosted four teams in Gosser Gym Saturday for its first home duals of the season, finishing 3-1 on the day.
The Tigers beat Calumet College St. Joseph, 49-0, and Tiffin University, 21-18, to start the day. After falling, 23-18, to Notre Dame College, ranked No. 1 in NCAA DII, CU responded with a 45-6 win over Mount St. Joseph.
CU DUALS RESULTS
"We have a very tough schedule. This team is competing the way we are asking them to, and I feel lke they are improving every time we compete. It's a very fun team to coach. We are off to a great start, and it's going to be a fun year," said Franky James, CU head coach. "We had great crowd support Saturday. Many former wrestlers were in attendance. We appreciate all of the support."
Travis McIntosh and Treyvontay Rhodse both finished the day with a 3-0 record and two pins. Colby Reinhart was also 3-0 on the day, while Kyle Terry was 2-0 with a pair of pins. Chase Boone and Shelby Floyd were the only other unbeaten Tigers.
CU's closest dual of the day was facing off against former NAIA champ Notre Dame College, currently ranked No. 1 in NCAA Division II. The Falcons took a 7-0 lead with a decision by Brian Hauser and major decision by No. 5 Marty Carlson. Rinheart scored the first points of the dual with a 4-3 decision over Andrew Bannister before Terry gave CU the lead, 9-7, with a third period pin of Maurice Miller, ranked No. 3 in NCCAA Division II. Treyvontay Rhodes also had a pin in the dual, keeping CU in front 15-10 entering the final four weights. Top-ranked Joey Davis remained undefeated for his career with an 11-3 major over Marvin Lawrence to pull Notre Dame within one team point. Travis McIntosh posted a 3-1 win at 184 pounds, but No. 3 Brandon Johnson gained three points back for Notre Dame at 197 pounds, making it an 18-17 dual entering the heavyweight bout. Second-ranked Orlando Scales needed only 29 seconds to pin freshman Justin McDaniel to give the Falcons the win.
Campbellsville (8-3) will return to action Saturday, Dec. 7 at the Ohio Northern Invitational in Ada, Ohio, where the Tigers have placed in the Top 2 the last four years. CU finished runner-up in the ONU Invitational each of the last two seasons after winning the tournament in 2009 and 2010.
