Lady Tigers drop heartbreaker to Georgetown, 2-1

CAMPBELLSVILLE, Ky. – Campbellsville University Lady Tiger soccer hosted the Mid-South Conference quarterfinals matchup against Georgetown College. CU outshot Georgetown 26-8 but could only capitalize once as Georgetown scored with two minutes remaining in regulation. The 2-1 loss for Campbellsville dashed the hopes and dreams for CU and knocked them out of the Mid-South Conference Tournament.

In the 88th minute, Sam Amend broke loose in the box on a corner kick by Tara Joesph and her header past CU goalkeeper Brandie Hagerman ended up being the game winning goal.

"It was very disappointing because we dominated the whole game," said Lady Tiger Coach Thom Jones. "We outshot them but did not capitalize on our opportunities."

Campbellsville took the early lead in the first half as Rachel Veatch scored the lone goal for CU in the 20th minute. Amend answered with a goal of her own just two minutes after Campbellsville took the 1-0 lead.

Georgetown's starting goalkeeper, Danielle Lang went down with an injury in the first half. Reserve goalkeeper Brittney Moshos replaced her and the Tigers dressed in black and orange did not miss a beat in goal.

The game was tied 1-1 going into half-time.

Campbellsville came out of the break and took control of the game but still could not break the tie.

The Lady Tigers kept shooting but the freshman goalkeeper, Moshos, recorded a career high 11 saves in her 69 minutes of play and eight in the second half.

Jones was not happy with the effort and production from the offensive side.

"Their defense kept back peddling and we didn't adjust and take the space," said Jones. "We started to panic and when they packed the box, we kept shooting too far out."

Campbellsville out shot GC with a total of 26-8 and 14-5 shots on goal.

Georgetown had a great chance to take the lead in the 73rd minute but Ariel Howell shot his the left post and the rebound came straight to Sarah Hencke but her shot went high and hit the crossbar. That was the last scare for Campbellsville and Hagerman until the final two minutes.

Amend broke the 1-1 tie with her second goal of the game and Campbellsville just ran out of time.

"Some of our players were not mentally into it and it showed," said the disgruntled Jones. "We kept waiting for the perfect shot and you wont get that when Georgetown was cramming the box."

With the loss, Campbellsville drops to 11-5-1 on the year and will now compete in the NCCAA Mid-East Regional Tournament hosted by Lee University in Cleveland, Tenn. The Mid-East Regional is set for Nov. 22-23. Official ratings and seeds should become available throughout next week.
