Tigers fall to No. 14 Philander Smith

CAMPBELLSVILE, Ky. –Campbellsville University pulled within a possession twice in the final six minutes but No. 14 Philander Smith College secured victory in game two of the Lou Cunningham Classic, 90-83, with strong free throw shooting down the stretch.

 



After Philander Smith stretched its lead to eight several times in the second half, Bryton Taylor hit a 3 to pull CU within two, 68-66, with 5:56 left. CU kept it a two-possession game until putting the Panthers on the free throw line in the final 1:29. Philander Smith hit 14-of-16 free throws to close the game and prevent any Campbellsville comeback attempt.

CU used an 8-0 run to overcome an 11-4 deficit to start the game. Eric Gaines capped the run with a layup to give Campbellsville its' first lead of the night, 12-11 with 13:54 left in the first half.

The Tigers got a stop on the next possession, but Kadeem Thornton turned it over at the top of the key, and Philander Smith capitalized, scoring the next nine points. Down by eight, CU responded with another run, out scoring PSC 13-3 to go up 24-23 after back-to-back baskets by Jordan Myers. CU led once more, 26-25, before Philander Smith pulled out to a 42-32 lead with 2:20 left in the opening half. Campbellsville worked the halftime deficit to 45-41.

Miles Rice hit a 3 to tie it, 47-47, in the first two minutes of the second half, but Campbellsville was unable to regain the lead.

Gaines finished with 19 points to lead all players, while Rice and Darius Clement each had 12. Philander Smith had five players score double figures, led by Andre Clark's 15 and D'Alvin Brown's 14. Aguill Baynard and Roy Marshall each scored 13 and Tevlin Morris had 12.

Campbellsville (3-5) will return to action Monday, Dec. 16 against Asbury University in a neutral site game at Gallatin County High School in Warsaw, Ky. The game will be broadcast live on WLCU 88.7 FM.
