Tigers rally to put away Asbury, 92-81, at Gallatin County

Box Score

WARSAW, Ky. – Campbellsville University used a 23-0 run late in the second half to flip the score and hold off Asbury University in a 92-81 win at Gallatin County High School.

"It was a great finish, but take away any of the logistics going into it, it was a great win for us. Losing this one would have been tough to bounce back from," said Keith Adkins, CU head coach. "Give the guys all the credit. They hung in there and kept plugging and withstood some Asbury runs. They just gutted it out."

The Tigers started the game cold, shooting 3-of-13 as Asbury used an 8-0 run to go up 16-6. The Eagles led by 11 multiple times in the first half. CU rallied to close the half shooting 42.9 percent, but down 32-36.

Asbury once again worked its lead to 11 points in the second half, 70-59, but the Tigers responded with a 26-2 run, including 23 straight.

Quin Richardson pulled CU within a point, 72-71, with a 3 from the corner, and then Darius Clement followed with a 3 to give CU the lead for good. Clement finished with a career-high 20 points, including 4-of-5 shooting from 3 and two free throws late to help ice the win. Richardson also scored a career high, finishing with 16 points on 3-of-3 shooting from the arc.

"Darius was the difference in the game. His offense in the first half kept us in it and his offense in the second half allowed us to stay within striking distance. His stat line is just incredible. If there was a game ball to be awarded, it would go to Darius," said Adkins.

Clement shot 7-of-13, had five rebounds and five assists with no turnovers in 32 minutes.

Eric Gaines was the third Tiger to score in double figures with 13 points, while Miles Rice scored nine points with eight assists, seven rebounds, two blocks, two steals and no turnovers.

"Miles Rice had a great game. When you look at his complete stat line, that's just a great stat line, and hopefully that will prove to the young freshman you don't have to make all of your shots and score 20 points at this level. You can affect the game in many ways," said Adkins.

All 11 Tigers scored in the game for the second time in three games.

"Everyone played well, but the three perimeter guys, Miles Rice, Darius Clement and Quin Richardson, were just monumental," Adkins said. "Quin hit some big shots, but the biggest part of it was he didn't turn the ball over. His minutes have been so sporadic this year, and that's been hard to do with such a stellar high school career."

CU (4-5) will return to action Thursday, Dec. 19 for its final game of the fall semester, hosting West Virginia University Tech at 7 p.m. in Powell Athletic Center.
