Miles Rice scored the first five points to give Campbellsville a 5-4 lead, and the Tigers didn't look back.
Campbellsville pushed its way out to a three possession game in the first half, but West Virginia closed the gap, cutting the Tigers' lead to four points, 34-30, with just over five minutes left. But that's when Kadeem Thornton took over the game.
Thornton rebounded a missed 3 by Quin Richardson and fed it back to him for a made 3 to stretch CU's lead back to seven. It was the first of four offensive rebounds, six points and two assists by Thornton to close the half. His two free throws with 35 seconds left gave CU its largest lead of the half at 50-38.
While Thornton finished with 12 points, seven rebounds and four assists in the game, Richardson was the one who led CU in scoring from the field and off the bench, shooting 7-of-10, including three 3s to score a career-high 17 points. It is the third time in the last four games the freshman from Scott County High School (Ky.) has eclipsed his career high, each time by a single point.
The Tigers led by 11 at the half, 52-41, but scored the first five points to open the second half. Tech cut the margin down to nine, 62-53, but CU put together a 17-4 run to take its largest lead of the night at 22 points, 79-57, with 9:47 to play. The WVU Tech Golden Bears pieced together a 14-4 run to pull within 10 points, 89-79, with 2:14 to play, but CU held off the rally at the free throw line, hitting all 12 attempts in the final two minutes.
Rice led CU's free throw efforts, hitting 8-of-8 from the line down the stretch to finish with a game-high 19 points.
