Box Score CAMPBELLSVILLE, Ky — Campbellsville University used a six-run eighth inning to complete a three-game, Mid-South Conference sweep over Georgetown College on Saturday.
Â
The 11-3 victory extends CU's win-streak to nine games, putting the Tigers at 17-4 on the season and 6-0 in the MSC.
Â
Junior right-hander Matt Robertson got the win on the mound for CU in just 5 2/3 innings of work. Robertson gave up four hits and two walks, while striking out two. This shutout win improves Robertson's season ERA to 1.07.
Â
Though Georgetown jumped out to a 2-0 leads in the first two games of the three-game series, it was Campbellsville that did so in game three.
Â
CU put up two runs in the opening inning, after Robertson was able to get out of a bases-loaded situation in the top of the frame.
Â
CU junior, Michael Bush led the inning off with a one-out double to right centerfield but was quickly batted in when fellow junior, Josh Potter followed suite in the next at-bat, doubling to left. Potter advanced to third on the throw home. Keaton Neeb grounded out to short, scoring Potter, CU 2-0.
Â
Robertson was able to get CU out of another sticky defensive situation in the top of the second. Georgetown was able to lead the inning off with two hits, but was not able to plate a runner, stranding two. Robertson shut the side down in the third after striking out the leadoff man, then walking the next batter into a 5-4-3 double play.
Â
Campbellsville moved three more runs across the board in the bottom half of the fourth inning.
Â
Junior Aaron Schwoebel reached first after taking a pitch in the side. Sophomore Ryan Squires advanced Schwoebel to second base, as he reached first on a 1-6 fielders choice. Senior Travis Hayes loaded the bases after being hit by a Georgetown pitch as well.
Â
Schwoebel scored from third on a wild pitch, advancing the other two base runners. A single up the middle by senior Tanner Neilson scored Squires from third . Bush scored Hayes on a ground out to the Georgetown shortstop, CU 5-0.
Â
The score remained the same until the top of the eighth inning, when Georgetown put up its only three runs of the afternoon. Senior right-handed pitcher, Mason Yates, who replaced Robertson in the bottom of the sixth, let two runners get on before giving up an RBI-double to deep right-center. With runners on second and third, junior, Jacob Phillips replaced Yates on the mound. Phillips struck out the first batter he faced before giving up a two-RBI single to shallow center, CU 5-3.
Â
The bottom half of the inning is when Campbellsville decided to turn on the offense. After a fly out to centerfield and a ground out to the pitcher, CU elected to pinch-hit with right-handed batter Carlos Torres for the left-handed Schwoebel when Georgetown brought in a lefty on the mound.
Â
Torres singled to right before Georgetown brought in another new pitcher, this time a righty; Schwoebel re-entered on the base path. CU's second pinch hitter of the inning, Brandon Johnson, advanced Schwoebel to second base on a walk; Squires re-entered on the bases as well. Hayes walked to load the bases, bringing in Georgetown's third new pitcher.
Â
Leadoff man, Tanner Neilson drove in two runs and advanced Hayes to second, with a single to left-center, CU 7-3.
Â
Bush loaded the bases for the second time in the inning when he was hit by a pitch. Potter reached first base on what probably should have been the last hit ball of the inning, hitting a weak dribbler to the Georgetown first baseman. But a wild throw to the pitcher running over to cover the bag allowed Potter to get on, and Hayes and Neilson to score, CU 9-3.
Â
Bush advanced to second on the error, then to third on a passed ball while Potter advanced to second on the same play. Neeb drove the two in with a single to shallow right field, CU 11-3.
Â
Georgetown finally got out of the inning with a fly out in foul territory in front of first base. But the visiting-Tigers' luck ended there as senior Tylar Schmunk came in to close the game out for CU, striking out three of the four batters he faced to seal the three-game, MSC sweep.
Â
Campbellsville finished the day a perfect 3-0 on the bases, when choosing to steal.
Â
CU outhit Georgetown 13-9, giving up just one error in comparison to Georgetown's two. The Tiger's pitching staff combined for seven strikeouts on the afternoon.
Â
CU will take a four-day break before returning to their home diamond at HIG field, when they will face another three-game conference series with The University of Virginia at Wise on Friday, March 22 at 6 p.m. EDT. CU will finish out the series with a double-header on Saturday, beginning at 3 p.m. EDT.
