Aaron Schwoebel led off the inning with a single to center. With the game on the line and one on base the Tigers pinch hit power hitter Michael Johnson and went small. Johnson laid down a bunt and beat it out as DSU catcher Kyle Holland's throw pulled first baseman Kevin Madera off the bag.
Moments later with two on and one out, Travis Hayes loaded the bases with an out, setting up an RBI single from Tanner Nielsen. With the game tied and the bases still juiced, Michael Bush crushed a ball to the warning track to center, allowing Ryan Squires to end on the game-winning sac fly.
Campbellsville was held to only one hit throughout the first five innings. Josh Potter delivered a two-out single in the bottom of the first to score Patrick McMeel's courtesy runner, Levi McCamish, after McMeel reached on a walk.
The 1-0 lead held until the third, when Nathan Wieneke singled to right to score Kyle Braun, tying the game, 1-1.
The score remained unchanged entering the bottom of the seventh. Â Potter singled to right to start the inning and was sacrificed to second on a fly ball by Keaton Neeb. Potter advanced to third on a passed ball before scoring on an RBI single by Schwoebel.
Dakota State rallied to tie the game in the ninth and take the lead in the 10th, both on balls in the dirt. In the ninth, Danny Flahie doubled to start the inning against new relief pitcher Allen Hewey (2-0). The game-tying wild pitch came with two outs in the inning. In the 10th, Hewey gave up a two-out single to Rays Roman, who later moved to to third on a single by Holland and scored on a passed ball.
Hewey (2-0) ended up holding on for the win, while McMeel finished with a no decision after pitching seven innings of a one-run game, allowing five hits and striking out 11. He did not allow a walk in the game.
At the plate, Potter led CU, reaching base three times. He was 2-for-4 and also reached base on an error at first after a hard hit ball back to the pitcher. Schwoebel was also 2-for-4. For DSU, Palmer and Holland were each 2-for-3.
The game was the first between Campbellsville head coach Beauford Sanders and his former pitching coach Scott Hortness, who took over the DSU program in 2010.
The Tigers (10-4) and Trojans (3-10) will return to action Saturday in a doubleheader at HIG Field, starting at 12 p.m. EST.
