Box Score LEBANON, Tenn. – It was a tough night for the Lady Tiger soccer team as they only managed two shots on goal the entire night, and ended up dropping their first Mid-South Conference game against 13th ranked Cumberland University (3-1, 1-0) 2-0.
The first 16 minutes of the game went back and fourth and no team had any momentum on its side. The offenses were struggling and the defenses took control early. But thunder and lightening halted play for a total of 93 minutes and Cumberland University took advantage of the extra break.
The Lady Bulldogs came out of the weather delay and Shauna Gilpin scored her third goal of the season within the first two minutes (17th minute of game).
"I told the girls if we come out soft, they will come out and score quick," said Coach Thom Jones. "And they did."
After the quick score, Campbellsville had its first shot on goal as sophomore, Aris Kuntz' boot was saved by Lady Bulldogs' goalkeeper, Lindsey Kitson. This was the only promising attack the Lady Tigers had in the first half.
"We then played really well for the next 20 minutes," Jones exclaimed.
Campbellsville and Cumberland University went into intermission with a score of 1-0 in favor of the Lady Bulldogs.
Both teams came out swinging in the second period. Cumberland and Campbellsville both had shots but nothing seemed to be on goal for the Lady Tigers. Cumberland had a total of 11 shots on goal and 23 total shots. With that deficit of shots and shots on goal, it was hard to get in any rhythm on the offensive side.
"We had some good opportunities, but we could not capitalize on them," said Jones.
One of the big opportunities Jones was talking about is when Campbellsville worked the ball to the right wing and then dropped the ball back to senior captain, Bailey McDonough. She took a shot that hit the crossbar and fellow captain, Jessica Ralph, followed the miss with a shot of her own. But Kitson made a great save.
That proved to be Campbellsville's only true attack on the night.
The defense on the other hand held tough even though the lopsided stats for shots. Goalkeeper Brandie Hagerman had a big save in the 61st minute to keep the score at only 1-0. She ended the night with a season-high nine saves.
But the defense could not hold down the 13th ranked team for long.
Lady Bulldog, Beth Morgan scored a goal in the 70th minute to put the game at a 2-0 deficit.
"Our defense did not get close to defend the shot by Morgan," said Jones. "She had an open shot and took advantage of our miscue on defense."
The Lady Tigers fall to 0-1 in the Mid-South Conference and 2-2-1 overall
They are back in action Friday at Finley Stadium against Asbury University, 6 p.m. is kickoff.
