Box Score LEBANON, Tenn. – Fifty-nine seconds away from a potential tie, sophomore Roraigh Yearwood spoiled a potential comeback for Cumberland University and scored the golden goal for Campbellsville University in a 4-3 double-overtime win.
The Mid-South Conference opener win extends Campbellsville's win streak to 7-0, the second best start in the program's 23 years. The win is also Campbellsville's 150th in program history, coming one week to the day that Yearwood netted two goals in an 8-1 win at Brescia University for Coach Adam Preston's 100th career win at CU.
Preston, who took over the program in 2003, has led the Tigers to four winning seasons and two National Christian College Athletic Association national tournaments in the last seven years.
"Congratulations to Coach Preston on 100 wins," said CU Athletic Director Rusty Hollingsworth. "Adam is proof that hard work and a great attitude can help you win. He gives his best to his players and this university every day, and I'm pleased he is leading our men's soccer program."
Tuesday night, Yearwood got things started for Campbellsville with a goal in the third minute, assisted by Ryan Foster, and then assisted a second goal in the 10th minute by Eurodger Bargblor. Cumberland cut the Tigers' lead to 2-1 before halftime with a goal by Elliot Goodwin in the 27th minute, assisted by Sella Gannot.
Cumberland tied the game in the second half Mark Harrison headed in a goal off the cross bar from an Alex Marr assist. John Kennedy regained the lead for Campbellsville, heading in a Tomoyuki Sueki corner kick in the 80th minute, but Luke Wilson tied it once again, 3-3, for Cumberland off a Harry Mason corner kick in the 83rd minute.
Campbellsville battled through 19 minutes of overtime, as Cumberland fired off five shots, but none were on target. Goalkeeper Max Malachiyev had three saves in the win.
The Tigers collected 21 shots during regulation but only two in overtime – the last one being Yearwood beating Bulldogs' keeper Ian Hamilton on a 1-on-1 after a long pass from Lewis Fyfe at 109:01.
Campbellsville (7-0, 1-0 MSC) remains the only undefeated team in the Mid-South Conference. Yearwood, who was named the Mid-South Conference Offensive Player of the Week for the second time Monday, has scored two goals in each of his last three games and now has a conference-leading four game winners on the season.
Campbellsville will return home to Citizens Bank Field and Finley Stadium on Thursday, Sept. 19 at 7 p.m. to host No.4 Lindsey Wilson College. CU is receiving votes in the NAIA Coaches' Poll with 51 points.
