Box Score CAMPBELLSVILLE, Ky. – Campbellsville women's soccer put up a good fight against No.1 ranked Lindsey Wilson College but the Blue Raiders pulled away in the second half, winning 5-1.
The scoring started for Lindsey Wilson first as an errant pass from CU went into the box and Ayaki Shinada drilled a shot past goalkeeper Brandie Hagerman.
Campbellsville struggled to get many shots in the first half. The best opportunity for the Lady Tigers was off the foot of freshman Hannah Harris. She had a shot from the 18-yard line that was saved by LWC goalkeeper Lina Jepsen.
"We were patient the first half," said Coach Thom Jones. "We wanted to play space and not chase man. And we did awesome besides the one mistake."
CU had only three shots in the first period and all three were on goal. Harris had two shots on goal and Mhairi Fyfe had the other lone shot.
To start the second half, Campbellsville came out proved they were not going to lie down after the first period deficit. CU stuck to its game plan and it paid off in the first three minutes of the second period.
In the 47th minute, Bailey McDonough had a corner kick that was perfectly placed inside the box. Fellow senior, Jessica Ralph jumped over the Blue Raider defense and headed the ball past Jepsen tying the game at one goal apiece.
Campbellsville had two opportunities to take the lead after the first goal in the second period. Toria Alsip had a chance just one minute after Ralph's goal, and her shot hit the crossbar. Ralph followed on the rebound and her shot hit the left post.
But it looked like CU awoke the Lindsey Wilson offense and the Blue Raiders answered with a goal of their own in the 53rd minute off the foot of Renee Hurd.
Then just 48 seconds later, Emilia Jonsson headed the ball in off a corner kick from Shinada making the score 3-1 early in the second half.
"After our goal (by Ralph) we tried to run with them," said Jones. "But they're the No. 1 team in the nation for a reason and you can't play at their speed."
After the goals by Lindsey Wilson, CU goalkeeper Brandie Hagerman came out to contend a ball at the 18-yard line but fouled Natasha Gensetter who was awarded a penalty kick. Gensetter's capitalized on her PK and made the score 4-1.
Campbellsville started to get back to their original game plan and slow the game down after the quick goals by the Blue Raiders, but Lindsey Wilson had all the momentum and had already put the game out of reach.
In the 84th minute, LWC added an insurance goal by Bettin Bruelhart and that made the game 5-1 in favor of LWC and that was the final score.
"Once we got back to our game plan, we started to play better soccer," said Jones. "But we are young and this was a learning experience for new girls."
In 18 games Campbellsville and Lindsey Wilson has faced off, the Blue Raiders are a perfect 18-0 and have outscored the Lady Tigers 160-1.
The loss for CU gives them an overall record of 3-3-1 and 0-2 in MSC play.
