"It was a really great starting point, especially for my returners, to have some times in the computer to start with to know how much we've improved in a couple of months," said CU swim coach Casey Smith. "I'm hoping that will help encourage some motivation. The season opener was placed at a good time in the season with a week off next week and then two meets Homecoming weekend."
CU women's swimming qualified two relay teams for the 2014 NAIA Swimming Championships, while sophomore Shelby Mattingly won the 50-meter freestyle with an NAIA B standard time of 29.11. The Lady Tigers won 11 of 14 races on the day with Mattingly also winning the 50-meter backstroke in 41.51 and Bailey Foxworth had three wins
Kyle Perkins 50-meter backstroke (37.27), Jessica Cook took first in both the 50-meter butterfly (34.67) 100-meter individual medley (1:21.42). Bailey Foxworth won the 800-meter freestyle with a time of 10:38.28 and the 200-meter IM in 2:43.10.
Lindy Charity and Emily Hunter swam the 200-meter free for the first time as a Lady Tiger. Charity edged Hunter by .05 of a second with a time of 2:32.33.
The men's swimming program fielded its first relay teams since 2000. Freshmen Daniel Fathergill, Devon Cross, Brad Clem and sophomore Filippo Albertino teamed up to swim the first men's relay since the program was reinstated last fall for CU. The foursome swam a time of 2:12.42 in the 200-meter medley relay. Later in the meet, Albertino, Cross, Fathergill and Clem teamed up for the 200-meter freestyle relay with a time of 1:59.56
"It was really enjoyable watching the first meet with relays for the guys reinstated team. Last year we had guys compete at various times in the season but we were not able to have relays. To have a men's relay on the meet program was really nice," Smith said.
Campbellsville will return to action Friday, Oct. 5 at the University of the Cumberlands and then will travel to Lindsey Wilson College on Saturday, Oct. 6.
