Box Score BLUEFIELD, Va. – Coming off a big 2-0 win against Georgetown College on Wednesday night, Campbellsville kept its momentum going as Aris Kuntz and Mhairi Fyfe scored goals in a 2-0 win over Bluefield College.
Campbellsville came out early in the game and its offense was hitting on all cylinders. The Lady Tigers had three shots on goal within the first eight minutes of the game compared to Bluefield's zero.
Kuntz dribbled the ball down the end line and took her shot just outside the penalty box. The ball traveled into the net by the near side post giving the Lady Tigers an early 1-0 lead.
opened up the point's category with he fourth goal of the year. But after the goal by Kuntz, Campbellsville started to struggle with ball possession and only had two more shots in the remaining 27 minutes and 19 seconds.
On the other side of the field, Bluefield was doing everything they could to even the score, but goalkeeper Brandie Hagerman kept coming up with save after save. Keeping the score 1-0 in favor of CU.
At the end of the first half, Campbellsville was ahead in the shots category with five total shots compared to Bluefield's three.
In the second half, both teams came out and were applying pressure. Campbellsville recorded three shots on goal within the first 15 minutes of the second half and Bluefield had two.
Campbellsville kept working the ball and keeping possession on the Bluefield side of the field.
"Our ball possession was key today," said Coach Thom Jones. "We played the ball well down the field and it led to both our goals."
The second goal came in the 61st minute as Jessica Ralph had her shot deflected off a Bluefield defender, but Fyfe was there to clean up the garbage as she kicked in her fourth goal of the game as well.
After the goal by Fyfe the defense stood its ground and would not allow Bluefield to record another shot on the day.
Morgan Danis was starting her first game of the year and she came up big for the Lady Tigers. CU was missing two-year starter Alex Shaffer due to injury and Danis stepped up n her absence at outside defender.
"Our defense did a good job today," said Jones. "Morgan and Brandie (Hagerman) both played great defense to keep us ahead all day."
Hagerman recorded three saves on all three shots on goal by Bluefield. And the defense only allowed five total shots on the day.
"I am pleased with the win today, but our overall performance could have been better," said Jones. "We struggled in the final third of the game and could not finish our offensive opportunities."
Campbellsville had five shots in the final 29 minutes but could not capitalize on any of them.
The Lady Tigers had 15 total shots on the day and eight were on goal. Kuntz led CU with three shots and Jessica Ralph was behind her with two.
The Lady Tigers are welcoming back their alumni for their matchup against University of Rio Grande on Saturday, Oct. 5. Homecoming week starts on Monday, Sept. 30 and will continue until after the women's and men's soccer games Saturday night.
Campbellsville has a full week to prepare for its matchup with The RedStorm. Rio Grande is 5-4 on the year and 2-1 in the Mid-South Conference. They are coming off a 2-0 win over Bluefield as well 2-0 and will play Pikeville Oct. 2.
