CAMPBELLSVILLE, Ky. – Campbellsville University swept its final home meet of the season Saturday against Bethel University and St. Catharine College in Powell Athletic Center.
The Lady Tigers beat both Bethel, 135-35, and St. Catharine, 128-30, while the Tigers edged the visiting Bethel Wildcats, 64-62.
"Overall, I am really proud of all of my athletes. Both the men and women worked really well together and relay exchanges were really good. That's something we've been working on, so it was real nice to see that," said Casey Smith, CU swim coach. "I enjoyed having Bethel and St. Catharine here. They're great athletes and great coaches."
CU started the day with a first-place finish in the women's 200-meter medley relay, as Bailey Foxworth, Emily Hunter, Jenna Rueff and Shelby Mattingly put together a time of 2:22.63. The Lady Tigers went on to win the 800-meter freestyle, 200-meter freestyle, 100-meter backstroke, 50-meter freestyle, 100-meter freestyle, 200-meter backstroke, 200-meter breaststroke, 400-meter freestyle and 200-meter free relay.
For the men, CU gained an edge with Daniel Fathergill being the only athlete to compete in the 800-meter freestyle, and a first-place finish by Filippo Albertino in the 50-meter freestyle. Albertino dropped .76 of a second off his seedtime and was trailing Bethel's Casey Kammerzell after the turn but sprinted his way to first in the final 25 meters. He edged Kammerzell by two-tenths of a second.
Jonathan Kattus also collected two first-place finishes for CU in the 100-meter free and 100-meter fly.
Midway through the double dual swim meet, Campbellsville University and Bethel University took a moment to recognize their seniors. Bethel honored women's swimmer Kayci Rezac, men's swimmer Alex Meddings and team manager Kenisha Dowell.
CU paid tribute to its lone senior, Kyle Perkins of North Pole, Alaska, who was unable to compete due to injury. Following the recognition, Perkins watched as Rueff, Foxworth, Mattingly and Kaitlyn Lanham represented the "Fab Five" and raced a 25-meter dog paddle, which Smith jokes is Perkins' favorite stroke.
"I was bummed Kyle couldn't be in the water, but I feel she was included in the meet today, and I'm glad we were able to have a more holistic approach to a senior meet than what would normally take place by having the senior recognition for both teams with seniors. It was definitely a highlight," said Smith.
Perkins is in her second and final year as a Lady Tiger swimmer and hopes to return to CU next year for a master's in social work.
"I am so thrilled that Kyle has been here on my team. It has been an adventure getting to know her and she has brought so much to the team. She will be greatly missed next year. I hope that she will come visit me and the team often when she has time between master's classes," said Smith. "I wish Kyle the absolute best in her future and hope that she enjoys every moment with the team and the "Fab Five."
Campbellsville will return to action Saturday, Feb. 1 at Lindsey Wilson College in Columbia, Ky. Start time is scheduled for 2 p.m. EST.
