Tiger hoops upset No. 24 St. Catharine in MSC battle

CAMPBELLSVILLE, Ky. – Tiger basketball picked up where it left off 12 days ago in Powell Athletic Center, as Campbellsville University knocked off No. 24 St. Catharine College, 67-57, Thursday night. The win is CU's third in Mid-South Conference action and second straight on its home court.

CU used a late rally in the first half to tie the Patriots, 31-31, and then pushed ahead and secured the 10-point victory with free throws in the final minutes.

 



Freshman forward Elliot Young, earning his first home start of the season, hit a 3 on the opening possession. CU led 5-2 before St. Catharine charged ahead with a 10-0 lead to go up 12-5. Eric Gaines ended the run with an old fashioned 3-point play. It was Gaines first of 13 points in the first half en route to a 25-point night.

Gaines scored eight of CU's final 13 points in the opening half as part of a 16-6 Tiger run. Darius Clement hit a jumper with eight seconds remaining in the half to force the halftime tie.

St. Catharine managed to work up a five-point lead, 42-37, seven minutes into the second half, but Young answered with a basket in the paint and a 3 to even the score, 42-42.He finished with 11 points.

Young's points started a 15-4 run to give CU its largest lead yet, 52-46, with less than seven minutes to play.

SCC strung together seven straight points to regain a brief lead, 53-52, on a William Bailey basket.

Clement regained the Tigers' lead with a pair of free throws, two of his eight in the game, and then Gaines scored the next four, including a fast break dunk off a steal at midcourt to give Campbellsville a six-point run and 58-53 lead with 3:19 to play.

Julito Hutchinson managed to cut the margin back to three, but the Tigers cruised to victory in the final three minutes, hitting 9-of-10 free throws, including six by Clement, who scored 13 points in the game.

Bailey led St. Catharine with 11 points, while Omar Skinner scored 10. Hutchinson and Raymon Austin finished with eight points each, while William Tolefree had eight boards.

Gaines and A'Darius Pegues led CU and all players with nine rebounds each, while Pegues collected five blocks to go with his eight points. Clement had four assists.

Campbellsville (8-9, 3-6 MSC) will travel to West Virginia Tech for a non-conference game Saturday, Jan. 25 at 3 p.m. EST, and then will return home and to MSC action Thursday, Jan. 30 against Lindsey Wilson College.
