COLUMBIA, Ky. – Fifth-ranked Campbellsville University was unable to take control of the Mid-South Conference standings Tuesday night, falling 23-9 to the NAIA National Duals runner-up, Lindsey Wilson College in Biggers Sports Complex.
The sixth-ranked Blue Raiders won their conference opener and now sit 1-0 in the MSC along with University of the Cumberlands. Campbellsville is 1-1 in the conference and Cumberland University is 0-2. LWC will host Cumberlands (Ky.) Friday and CU will travel to Cumberlands on Feb. 12. Â
Third-ranked Cody Steiner started the Tigers' off on top with a 10-8 wiin over No. 6 Myron Bradbury. Steiner battled back from two early takedowns to even the score, 7-7, with a third-period takedown with 1:17 left. He took advantage of a stalling point to gain a one-point lead over Bradbury and added a late takedown to secure the win.
LWC evened the match with an upset at 133 pounds by Keaton Thomas, who used an early takedown and two near fall points to gain a 4-0 edge. Thomas held onto 1:47 of riding time through the match to break a 7-7 tie and knock off No. 4 Tyler Alsip by an 8-7 decision.
The Blue Raiders won the next four matches to take control of the dual. Third-ranked Wissmit Moinius beat No. 7 Colby Reinhart, 6-1, and then Brandon Westerman, ranked No. 2 at 141 pounds, dropped a 149-pound decision to Isaac Thomas, 9-5. Top-ranked Joe Cozart worked his way to a major decision, 17-7, at 157 pounds over sixth-ranked Shawn McGhee, stretching LWC's lead to 13-3. No. 14 Mitchell Judkins added an upset at 165 pounds over CU's Treyvontay Rhodes, 3-0.
With four weights remaining, CU needed to win them all and with at least two bonus points to pull out the conference win.
No. 11 Travis McIntosh ended the drought with a 7-2 win at 174 pounds for the Tigers, but defending NAIA champion Jameel Bryant clinched the Blue Raiders' win with an 8-0 major decision over Kyle Sweedman at 184 pounds.
LWC added another upset win at 197 pounds, while Justin McDaniel collected a 3-2 decision at heavyweight to end the dual with three more Tiger points.
Campbellsville (22-5, 1-1 MSC) will return to action Saturday, Feb. 8 for a dual at Lindenwood University Belleville in Belleville, Ill. Start time is 7:30 p.m. EST.
