CAMPBELLSVILLE, Ky. – No. 5 Campbellsville University brought a six game winning streak into tonight's matchup against No. 8 Georgetown College and were upset by its conference rival, losing 86-79.
Georgetown (9-3, 3-1 MSC) jumped out on a 15-3 run coming out of halftime and Campbellsville (13-2, 4-1 MSC) was not able to recover.
"Andrea Howard came out and got hot for them and took over," said CU Coach Ginger Colvin. "She can do many things for them and her scoring is what did us in tonight."
Georgetown took a 44-36 lead with 14:54 remaining in the game and never trailed again while shooting a blistering 70 percent from the floor in the second half.
Although, Campbellsville did not lead again it did get the game back down to a two-point differential on a steal and breakaway layup by Angie Lawrence.
But GC went on a 7-0 run and dashed the hopes of Campbellsville staying perfect in the Mid-South Conference.
"Howard and Jonas are great every game for Georgetown," said Colvin. "They both do many different things for them and carried the team."
Campbellsville and Georgetown were neck-and-neck for the first eight minutes of the contest until Campbellsville's Daizah Kimberland picked up back-to-back baskets and gave CU a 18-11 lead with 12:06 left in the first half.
The Lady Tigers remained six to eight points ahead as they received another spark off the bench.
Caroline Owen was kept quiet against Cumberland University but the junior from Carthage, Tenn. came off the bench and hit two 3-point baskets within her first six minutes of play.
Lindsey Burd was coming off back-to-back career highs against Lindsey Wilson and Cumberland. She came off the bench and ignited Campbellsville in the first half. Within the first six minutes she was on the floor, she had used her patented spin move to toss in eight of the 20 Campbellsville points.
She finished the half with a team-leading 12 points and four rebounds. But was held to only four points in the second half.
Campbellsville led at the intermission 33-29.
Whatever third-year coach Andrea McClosky told her players she lit a fire under her team. The Lady Tigers dressed in orange and black went on their 15-3 run and took a 44-36 lead with 14:54 remaining forcing Colvin to call her first timeout.
But just like Georgetown, the Tigers dressed in white and maroon took the timeout speech from their leader and responded. Campbellsville went on an 8-2 run and cut the lead to 46-44.
But that is when Howard and Jonas both stepped up for Georgetown. The duo finished with 52 points between them and 15-of-18 from the free throw line. Howard scored 28 with Jonas pitching in 23.
Campbellsville did make a few runs late in the game, as the offensive rebounds started to pile up for the Lady Tigers. CU recorded 22 offensive boards but only 13 on the defensive side.
CU's guard play stepped up their defense late as they were asked to provide full-court defense throughout the second half.
LeeAnn Grider scored back-to-back buckets at the nine-minute mark and cut the lead to 58-55 and Ellen Sholtes picked up another steal cutting the lead in half, 58-57.
Although the late runs, CU was not able to overcome the Georgetown run at the beginning of the half and could not record a stop on the defensive side.
Georgetown used a long football pass from Kourtney Tyra to Howard. She was fouled by Grider on her layup attempt and hit two free throws.
Down the stretch in the second half Georgetown used its free throw shooting to down Campbellsville. GC went 14-for-17 in the final five minutes with Howard hitting all eight of her attempts.
Georgetown sealed the game as the shot clock was running down with 2:35 left on the game clock but Jonas hit a big 3-pointer giving GC a nine point lead, 72-63.
"Georgetown is a really good team and they knocked their shots down tonight," said Colvin. "Free throws was the difference and they made 78-percent compared to out 59-percent."
Campbellsville was led by Kimberland as she tied her career high 18 points and Burd scored 16. Those two were the only players in double figures, as they both have played with a fire since the Christmas break.
The Lady Tigers will remain home on Saturday, Jan. 11 as it will host No. 21 University of the Cumberlands.
"Cumberlands is a lot different than Georgetown cause they like to slow the pace of the game down a lot and play possession basketball," said Colvin. "We are going to try and speed the pace up and try to come back with a win in conference."
