CAMPBELLSVILLE, Ky. —Four Lady Tigers went out in style Saturday night, as Campbellsville defeated Shawnee State University, 5-0, on Senior Night.
BOX SCORE
Alysen Shireman, Alex Shaffer and Hannah Pritchert all played one of their final games at Finley Stadium and Citizens Bank Field. Kara McKee, who was injured earlier in the season, also participated in the senior ceremonies after the game.
"I am very happy for the seniors to get a win like that," CU head coach Thom Jones said. "And I was able to start them all and play them, except Kara, obviously."
Campbellsville came out of the starting gates on fire and picked up a 3-0 lead within the first 12 minutes of the game.
Rachel Veatch gave CU a 1-0 lead in the fourth minute, as she scored her fourth goal of the season. Four goals are good for second on the team behind Mhairi Fyfe's now 11 goals.
Fyfe put a little more distance between her and Veatch during the night. The sophomore from Livingston, Scotland gave CU a little cushion by scoring two goals within five minutes of each other, giving her four goals for the week.
Veatch picked up her second assist of the season on the second goal by Fyfe.
Campbellsville went into halftime with a 3-0 lead. Just five minutes after the intermission, Devon Burnside added to the lead.
Senior defender Alysen Shireman, who had not scored in her three years at CU, was given that chance tonight.
A CU player was fouled inside the box and Jones allowed Shireman to attempt the penalty kick and steal the show.
She did not let the opportunity pass.
"It was so great to go out on senior night with a goal," said Shireman. "I am so excited to see what the end of the season brings. Our team has really come together, and we are going to be something special down the home stretch."
"I was especially happy for Aly to get the PK," said Jones. "She told me before the game she was going to score but we never thought it would be via a PK. I am really happy for her."
The win is the third straight shutout win for Campbellsville and freshman goalkeeper Amanda Howard.
Campbellsville (8-6, 3-2 MSC) now sits in third place inside the Mid-South Conference. University of Pikeville (8-4, 2-2 MSC) sits in fourth and plays Lindsey Wilson College (7-3-2, 4-0) tomorrow at 6 p.m. ET.
"We have some big games coming up againt MSC team," said Jones. "We let up last year at this time and let St. Catharine steal a game from us. We cannot let that happen this year. If we win out like we are supposed to, then we will finish right where we were expected."
