Box Score CAMPBELLSVILLE, Ky. – Students stormed the field Saturday night after a hurried corner kick with three seconds left, ricocheted off Shawnee State University's goalkeeper and into the net as time expired. The game-winning own goal gave Campbellsville University a 4-3 win over the Bears at Finley Stadium and Citizens Bank Field.
It's the second straight Mid-South Conference game for Campbellsville to be decided by an own goal. The first was a 2-1 loss last Wednesday to St. Catharine College. However, Saturday's win keeps Campbellsville in the hunt for a second place finish in the MSC.
"It was good to see some desperation from our guys. At times we have sleepwalked through matches and started to do the same tonight. At the end, we went all in and resulted in an important win," CU head coach Adam Preston said. "Hopefully we can build off of this and do something special with the rest of the year.
"Credit to Shawnee. They fought hard the whole match and carried themselves well after a tough finish."
The game-winner was set up when CU sent a free kick into the box in the final minute. The cross was cleared out by a Shawnee State defender with 10 seconds remaining. Gustav Carlsson quickly gathered a ball to set up the corner kick, which led to the goal.
Saturday's game started the same way most recent CU games have with Marcelo Petit making a quick strike toward his opponent's goal. Petit's shot missed high and Shawnee took advantage of their chance to have the first lead.
The Bears got on the board in the sixth minute when Connor Sherman found Ben Pulsford for a goal. SSU added an insurance goal in the 15th minute, scored by Martyn Sayer and assisted by Nick Dowdell.
The insurance wasn't enough though. Carlsson scored the Tigers' first goal and then Alex Ryan evened the score, 2-2, on a penalty kick with 1:11 left in the first half.
Petit gave Campbellsville its first lead roughly 10 minutes into the second half, but Shawnee State was awarded a PK in the 72nd minute. Pulsford scored on the kick to even the match, 3-3.
CU had four shots saved by Shawnee State keeper Brandon Pfeifer in the final 18 minutes, while SSU only had one shot, which missed high.
The Tigers had 17 total shots in the game, including nine on goal to set up five saves for Pfeifer. SSU had nine total shots and scored each of its three shots on goal against CU keeper Josh Hollis.
Campbellsville (9-5, 3-2 MSC) will play its final home game of the regular season Tuesday, Oct. 21 when it hosts Asbury University for Senior Night. Two MSC games remain on the road at Pikeville on Oct. 25 and University of the Cumberlands on Nov. 1
