WLLIAMSBURG, Ky. — It was a record-breaking day for Campbellsville Athletics and sophomore Mhairi Fyfe put an exclamation point on a 9-0 route over University of the Cumberlands.
Fyfe recorded back-to-back hat tricks in the previous two games for the Lady Tigers and has now surpassed the single-season goal mark set by Jessica Ralph last season (18). Fyfe scored three-consecutive goals against the Patriots within a span of 17 minutes, giving her 20 on the season.
"I am very happy for Foz (Mhairi) and proud of what she has accomplished," said CU coach Thom Jones. "She is one of the most unselfish players I have coached and really deserves to break any record. The best part is she broke the record during the regular season and we still have post-season games. She can extend this record with the pace she is going."
Fyfe was not to be outdone, though, as freshman Madison Ratchford picked up her first career hat trick. Ratchford gave CU a 1-0 lead just 65 seconds into the game and extended the lead to 2-0 just five minutes later.
Fyfe delivered her three goals, but Ratchford added her third in the 53rd minute to give CU a 6-0 lead.
Rachel Veatch and Chelsea Gill also scored goals. Alex Shaffer was awarded a penalty kick in the 67th minute and delivered to add on to the Lady Tiger lead.
With the nine goals, GK Amanda Howard had a pretty easy day, but still recorded four saves.
The Lady Tigers are on a seven-match win streak and have scored at least four goals per game during that span. Campbellsville is averaging just about 5.5 goals per game while CU's defense also has pitched a shutout in six of those.
Campbellsville will now move into Mid-South Conference play this week. The Lady Tigers have clinched the No. 3 seed and will play the loser of Georgetown College vs. University of Pikeville. That game will be played Monday, Nov. 3.
Campbellsville will play that winner on Friday, Nov. 7 at 6 p.m. at CU's Finley Stadium.
"We are peaking right now," said Jones. "We have been playing great soccer as of late and I am proud of this team and how they have come together. Whoever we play (Pikeville or Georgetown), we have to play our game and take care of business."
