Lady Tigers survive cold shooting, beat Bluefield 52-46

Box Score

BLUEFIELD, Va. — Campbellsville survived a 10-minute scoreless span in the second half and put Bluefield College away tonight in The Dome, 52-46.

"We didn't shoot it well," said coach Ginger Colvin. "and it's not like we were taking bad shots."

The Lady Tigers (9-0, 3-0 MSC) shot just 31 percent for the game after it looked like they were going to run away from the Rams (4-6).

CU scored the first 10 points of the game and hit four of its first five 3-pointers to lead 21-6 with 12:36 remaining before intermission. Caroline Owen connected on her first two shots, both 3-pointers, and Madison Clements and Lexxus Graham both hit one 3 each in the early going.

Other than a 9-0 run to start the second half, points came harder than usual for Campbellsville.

"That was our first real away game and I think it was good for us to face that kind of adversity," continued Colvin. "We were out-rebounded for the first time this year. Not only were we missing, but we couldn't get an offensive rebound when we had a chance."

Bluefield made a 10-2 run in the first half that allowed the Rams to crawl to within 23-16 on a 3 by Shelby Key. The Lady Tigers led 31-25 at half-time.

Kristen Jacob led CU with 10 first-half points and took four charging fouls in the second half, the biggest with 5:58 remaining and CU clinging to a 45-40 lead.

CU led 40-27 at the 16:50 mark of the game, but went on a 10-minute scoring drought that allowed Bluefield to get as close as 45-42 on two Sharonda Tate free throws. Clements hit a 3 to end the drought and LeeAnn Grider's 15-foot jumper pushed CU's advantage to 50-42.

Bluefield was led by Maryah Mazyck's 10 points. Owen led Campbellsville with 13, 2-of-4 from the free throw line in the last 26 seconds.

Lindsey Burd led CU with 11 boards, but was beaten for game-high honors by Bluefield's Destiny Tolliver with 18.

The Lady Tigers stay on the road with a quick turnaround game tomorrow against Bluefield State College. Tip is set for 2 p.m.
