Tigers beat LWC to remain unbeaten in MSC

Box Score

COLUMBIA, Ky. – Campbellsville University sits alone atop the Mid-South Conference standings following a 67-62 win at Lindsey Wilson College on Thursday.

Campbellsville (11-1, 4-0 MSC) secured the win with Damontre Harris, Darius Clement and Quin Richardson hitting 4-of-6 free throws in the final 40 seconds to hold off a late rally by the Blue Raiders.

"That's not a good win, that's a great win," CU head coach Keith Adkins said. "A really good win for us in our first road game in the Mid-South Conference."

Campbellsville will now close out its first semester MSC schedule in Lebanon, Tenn., at Cumberland University on Saturday. Tipoff is 5 p.m. EST.

"You can suffer a hangover off a win or a loss. If we hold on to this win too long, then all of a sudden you're not undefeated anymore," Adkins said. "This game coming up is the biggest game of the season so far. We have an opportunity to put a little separation between ourselves and some other teams in the conference, who won't be able to catch us until January."

Lindsey Wilson scored the initial basket, but Darius Clements hit a 3 to open the Tigers' scoring at the 17:37 mark in the first half. The basket sparked an 8-0 run, but LWC responded with a six unanswered points to tie the game at eight.

Eric Gaines hit a pair of free throws to keep CU in front, and Elliot Young then hit a 3, followed by a Damontre Harris basket to put CU back up by five, 15-10. Kevin Bradshaw helped regain Lindsey Wilson's lead, 20-19, for a brief moment with seven minutes left in the half, but Harris put CU back in front.

The two rivals tied once again, 23-23, with 5:48 to play in the half after a 3-point play by Charles Sutton. However, both teams went cold from the floor for the next three minutes. LWC's Quentine Purtue took the lid off the baskets with 2:27 to play after D'Von Campbell regained the lead for CU on a pair of free throws. Rob Robinson gave CU a 27-25 lead with 1:56 to play, and the score held going into halftime.

Lindsey Wilson struggled at the free throw line in the first half, hitting 53.8 percent of its attempts, while CU knocked down all four. CU was held to 31.3 percent from the floor in the opening stanza.

Campbellsville steadily built its lead in the second half, improving its shooting to 50 percent in the final 20 minutes.

Clement hit a trio of 3s in a span of two minutes to push the Tigers' lead into double-figures, 50-39, with 10:01 to play. He finished the night with five 3-pointers and a season-high 21 points to lead all players. Clement's 21 matches his all-time high against LWC and is two shy of his collegiate career-high.

"That was reminiscent of last year when he changed a couple of games. He made some big shots late in the game to give us some cushion. Give the guy some credit, he's a senior and was the difference tonight. There's no question," Adkins said.

Harris swatted his first block of the game with 5:49 left and ended a more than 40-minute gap without a block. CU turned the play into points on the other end with a layup by Gaines. Harris blocked one more shot in the game and now has 47 blocks through 12 games, the most of any player this season in all levels of college basketball. He also had 10 points and 10 rebounds for his sixth double-double of the season.

Gaines finished with 11 points to follow Clement, while Campbell had nine points.

Kevin Bradshaw scored 18 to lead Lindsey Wilson College, followed by 12 by Julian Edmonson.
