"I think our team is starting to get it. As I left the locker room, Doc (DeShawn Dockery) asked me how many points we allowed, and he told the guys 'that's where we know we have to be at. We've not been successful in high scoring shootouts,'" said Keith Adkins, Campbellsville head coach. "A month ago, I don't think we win this game. Early we were finding ways to lose or didn't have the experience to find a way to win. Hopefully we can carry that over to the rest of the season. I think our team is showing some maturity as a team and is starting to make a difference."
A'Darius Pegues collected the first run of the game all on his own, scoring eight straight in the first three minutes to give the Tigers an 8-2 lead over Cumberland. The run came as a result of three-consecutive Bulldog turnovers, including a charge drawn by Pegues.
"A'Darius Pegues set the tone early in this game. With Cumberland U's lack of size in the post, AD gave us a presence in the post. We've got to figure out how to put together two complete halves for him though. As he becomes more active and a more dominant presence for us, I think things will continue to change as a team for us as well."
The Tigers shot 75 percent in the first six minutes, including five points by Jordan Myers and a 3 from Elliott Young, who went on to lead CU with 14 points in the game. Pegues had 12 and Myers scored 11.
Campbellsville's lead remained five or six for most of the first half until a goaltending call against Pegues counted a basket for Josh Wilkerson to pull Cumberland within a point, 22-21, with 5:06 to play in the first half.
Young scored six of the Tigers' next nine to stretch the lead to 31-21 with 2:22 to play, before Cumberland closed the half on an 8-0 run. Alex Flagler's 3-pointer with 36 seconds before the break cut Campbellsville's lead to 31-29 at halftime. Flagler and Marquel Hickerson each had seven points to lead Cumberland at the half and finished with 11 apiece.
The Bulldogs kept Campbellsville close through most of the second half, tying it four times before taking the lead, 53-52, on a 3 by Wilkerson with 7:30 to play. It was Cumberland's first since the opening possession of the game. Wilkerson then dished an assist to Hickerson to stretch Cumberland's lead to 55-52, but Cumberland went cold for the next three minutes.
Darius Clement tied the game, 55-55, with a pair of free throws and Miles Rice hit a 3, his first basket of the night, with 3:48 to play to start an 8-0 run, which eventually grew to 20-4 to end the day. The Tigers knocked down 12-of-13 free throws in the final 4:18, while Cumberland shot 7.6 percent (1-for-13) from the field in the last six minutes.
Campbellsville out-rebounded Cumberland 31-29, led by a career-high seven boards off the bench from 6-foot forward Demarcus Page. Page also scored eight points, along with Eric Gaines and Rice.
"I think you're starting to see Demarcus mature as a college basketball player. I've always said point guard is the hardest position to play in college, but he's had a difficult challenge because he's an undersized power forward. He has to be that 'basketball warrior.' It's taken a little while, but now you see his minutes going up and his production going up," said Adkins.
Lamar Brinkley led Cumberland on the glass with eight boards and scored a season-high 15 points. Wilkerson joined Flagler and Hickerson with 11 points apiece.
Dockery and Flagler led their teams with five assists each, while Clement followed Doc with four Tiger assists.
The win is Campbellsville's third-straight in the Mid-South Conference and pulls the Tigers (10-10, 5-6 MSC) into a tie for fifth place in the MSC standings with University of the Cumberlands (13-8, 5-6 MSC). Campbellsville travels to Cumberlands on Thursday, Feb. 6 for an 8 p.m. EST tipoff in Williamsburg, Ky.
It will be the third consecutive MSCÂ game for the Tigers against an opponent with a matching MSC record.
