EDWARDSVILLE, Ill. – Fifth-ranked Campbellsville University Tiger wrestling had two tough duals Sunday against NCAA teams at the Southern Illinois University at Edwardsville Duals. The Tigers' first took on NCAA Division I opponent Eastern Michigan University, falling 41-3, and then faced Grand Canyon University (NCAA DII), falling 36-10.
Due to illness, CU forfeited its 125-pound matches again Sunday, starting both duals in a 6-0 hole.
Against Eastern Michigan, 133-pounder Drew Ferguson lost by decision, 4-2, in a close battle against EMU's Shayne Wireman. Colby Reinhart recorded CU's only win at 141 pounds with a decision, putting the Tigers on the board with three points.
Campbellsville couldn't seem to find its grove after Reinhart's match, losing the rest of the matches in the dual.
Sam Conors wrestled 149 losing by a decision, Terry Harris lost by a major decision at 157 pounds and Shelby Floyd was pinned at the 165 pound weight class to clinch the match for EMU, leading 22-3. At 174, Travis McIntosh had a close match coming down to the last seconds, losing by a 13-11 decision. Miguel Santis was pinned at 184 pounds, and the Tigers gave up another forfeit at 197 pounds. Heavy weight Justin Sampson lost by a major decision to close the dual.
The Tigers' next dual was against Grand Canyon University. After CU forfeited 125, Tyler Alsip started off the dual at 133 pounds with a 10-3 loss by decision. Brandon Westerman put the Tigers on the board, 9-4, with a major decision in the 141-pound weight class. Matt Milton lost by a major decision at 149, but Shawn McGee and Marvin Lawrence both came recorded decision wins to pull Campbellsville within three points, 13-10. Travis McIntosh lost by a pin at 174, and Miguel Santis was teched at 184 to clinch the win for Grand Canyon, up 24-10. Campbellsville gave up another forfeit at 197 pounds and Justin McDaniel was pinned at heavyweight.
Campbellsville (23-6) will return to NAIA action Wednesday, Feb. 12 at University of the Cumberlands for its final Mid-South Conference Dual. Start time is 7 p.m. EST.
