Swim teams finish third at MSC Invitational

COLUMBIA, Ky. – Campellsville University swimming closed its 2013-14 regular season Saturday with both the men and women finishing third in the Mid-South Conference Invitational at Lindsey Wilson College's Holloway Natatorium.

"It was really nice to have my men's and women's teams this year at the conference meet, as last year I was only able to compete the ladies team. They all worked well together and it was a great first year of many for the men's and women's programs working as one," said Casey Smith, CU head coach.

CU's women had six swimmers place in the Top 3 in five events during the second day of the MSC meet. Bailey Foxworth was second in the 400 IM after dropping 10 seconds off her preliminary time. Emily Hunter was third in the event. Rebekah Tilton also recorded a second-place finish, posting a season-best time of 22:27.24 in the 1650 Free.

CU also placed third in three relays, the 200 medley, 400 free and 800 free.

"On the women's team, there were many great swims. Two that really stood out to me were Rebekah in the 1650. She set herself a goal that she far surpassed and swam an excellent and consistent race. It was a wonderful way to end her individual season," said Smith.

Campbellsville also welcomed back its lone senior Kyle Perkins, who finished fifth in the 200 backstroke in a time of 2:38.09.

"Kyle was back in the water for the first time in months swimming backstroke, and she swam very well. She has a beautiful, graceful stroke, and I have truly loved watching her compete. Even through a frustrating injury, she trained very hard and it paid off," said smith.

For the men, CU's top finish Saturday was in the 40 free relay, as Jon Kattus, Devon Cross, Daniel Fathergill and Filippo Albertino combined for a third-place time of 3:49.56. CU was fourth in the 200 medley relay in 1:59.01.

"On the men's team, it was great to see such awesome team work in their relays. They did very well individually by working hard to swim races some of them had never done before," said Smith. "There were a lot of time improvements, even just from prelims to finals. I am particularly proud of them, especially with their display of team spirit and sportsmanship. I love being their coach. They had a great meet."

Campbellsville will have two weeks off before traveling to Oklahoma City, Okla., for the NAIA Swimming & Diving Championships.
