Box Score GEORGETOWN, Ky. – Darius Clement was the Campbellsville Tigers' hero once again. For the second straight game, Clement hit a game-tying shot in regulation, only this time he added a 3 and late layup to finish with 20 points and lead Campbellsville to a 74-68 overtime win Saturday at No. 13 Georgetown College.
Â
With just over 10 seconds to go, Clement saw some day light in the Georgetown defense and exploded through the gap off a Jordan Myers screen to hit an off-balance shot outside the block and tie the game at 61. The shot ignited the Tiger faithful that made the drive up to Davis-Reid Alumni Gym.
On Thursday, Clement hit a deep 25-footer behind Myers' screen to tie the game at 63 and send the game to overtime in a win at University of Cumberlands.
"I told the guys what I wanted, and it was exactly the same plan we ran Thursday at Cumberlands," said Keith Adkins, CU head coach. "It has been successful for us a few times this season. So why go away from it?"
Campbellsville led at halftime, 32-31, but Georgetown went on a 16-4 run to jump out to its largest lead of 11 points. Campbellsville worked the lead slowly but surely and whittled it away to two points, 59-57, on a pair of Eric Gaines free throws with 2:17 left. This is when the CU Tigers took over.
It was the closest CU had been since the 17:50 mark in the second half. After a Monty Wilson shot was off the mark for GC, Clement and Quin Richardson both missed open opportunities to tie or take the lead.
But CU got another stop, as Georgetown was frigid cold from the field and did not score a bucket from 3:07 to 51 seconds left in regulation. Campbellsville got the ball down low to A'Darius Pegues on the ensuing possession. Pegues missed but the ball was tapped in by Eric Gaines to tie the game at 59 with 1:15 left.
Pegues fouled out of the game with 42.1 seconds left after sending Georgetown's Domonique Hagans to the line. The 6-foot-10 center from Fayetteville, N.C., finished with nine points, including 7-for-9 from the line, and four rebounds.
Hagans missed the first free throw but made the second to put GC up by one, 60-59 with 45 seconds left in regulation.
Both teams turned the ball over twice before DJ Townsend was hacked by DeShawn Dockery, giving him two free throws attempts. He made 1-of-2 to give Campbellsville a chance only down two, 61-59.
Roll Clement's highlights.
Georgetown saw two chances in the final 14 seconds but its leading scorer at 24 points a game, Monty Wilson missed a 3-pointer and Hagans missed a tip-in just outside the lane to send CU to overtime for the second-straight game, the first time CU has played back-to-back extra time in program history.
In overtime, Campbellsville was able to regain the lead on a Gaines free throw with 3:41 left in the extra period. It was CU's first lead since halftime.
Clement was able to hit another layup as he drove by Hagans again, and also hit a fade away jumper over the taller Hagans, to give his Tigers a 68-64 lead with 1:04 left.
With only 28 ticks remaining, everyone in the gym knew who was talking the shot for Campbellsville. Clement used another ball screen from Myers and drained a 3-pointer right in front of Adkins on the right wing. That proved to be the dagger for Georgetown, giving Campbellsville a 71-66 lead.
Townsend added a late field goal for Georgetown, while Campbellsville closed the game with three free throws, 2-for-3 from Demarcus Page and 1-for-2 from Clement.
"Darius Clement wants the ball in those situations and his leadership for this young team has been crucial, especially in conference play," said Adkins.
Entering halftime, Clement only had two points, but he had the hot hand late and exploded for 18 second half points to finish one shy of his career-high, 21 (Lindsey Wilson, Jan. 30). He shot 7-for-16 from the floor and 2-of-5 from behind the 3-point arc. He was also 4-for-6 from the charity stripe.
"He didn't play all that great the first 30 minutes of the game, and I got on him a few times with lack-luster plays, but it's always how you finish, and Darius picked us up again tonight. He has been around this program for almost seven years now, as his older brother Shawn was a starting guard for me. He knows this program and our schemes better than anyone and it's great to see him come into his own," said Adkins.
Gaines and Miles Rice both finished with 13 points to round out double-figure scorers for CU. Gaines also grabbed 14 rebounds, which ties a career-high set against Life University on Dec. 7, 2013. It is his second-straight double-double and third this season.
Georgetown struggled on the day overall from the floor and the free throw line. GC came into the game ranked No. 5 in the NAIA for free throw percentage (74 percent), No. 24 for field goal percentage (47.3) and No. 3 for points per game (94.7). Campbellsville held the MSC rival to 36 percent (26-for-72) shooting from the floor and 41 percent (12-for-29) from the free throw line. Both are season lows for the 13th ranked team in the nation. It was also GC's second lowest scoring output of the season after being held to 62 points against Cumberland University on Jan. 23.
The overtime win is CU's first over Georgetown and only the second OT game in the series' history. GC beat Campbellsville 87-84 in OT in December 1993.
The win completed a road sweep for Campbellsville at Georgetown on Saturday, as CU women's basketball won 85-71. It is the second-straight year CU has swept Georgetown on the road but only the third time since 1999.
With the win Campbellsville (12-10, 7-6 MSC) moves two games over .500 and is now tied for fourth in the MSC standings after St. Catharine College lost at the University of the Cumberlands. CU has won its last four games and five of its last six. All wins were against MSC opponents with the lone loss coming out of conference at West Virginia Tech on Jan. 25.
Campbellsville will return to Powell Athletic Center next week to host University of Rio Grande on Thursday, Feb. 13 and Shawnee State University for Senior Day on Saturday, Feb. 15.
