DeRooy's complete game leads CU over Pikeville

Box Score

PIKEVILLE, Ky. — Campbellsville Tiger Baseball traveled to University of Pikeville on Saturday afternoon and won game one of the three game series, 4-3, at Johnnie LeMaster Field.

BOX SCORE

Campbellsville (19-13, 8-7 MSC) picked up single runs in the second and fifth inning and Pikeville (19-17, 6-9 MSC) aided CU with two runs in the eighth inning to capture the series opener.

Alex Scanlan led CU at the plate, going 3-for-4 and drove in one run. Alex Kline and Jaime Valle both had two hits and Carlos Torres, who is playing through an injury, went 1-for-4 and picked up an RBI.

The Tigers broke a scoreless tie in the top of the second inning after a one-out single by Ryan Squires and a RBI double by Scanlan.

Squires has been on a tear of late. After the first 13 games to start the season, the junior from Elizabethtown, Ky., had a batting average of .185 (5-for-27). But in the last 12 games, Squires is hitting .500 (15-for-30) and has hit safely in 9-of-12 games with multiple hits in four of those, including three hits against University of the Cumberlands twice (March 15) and Union College (April 2).

Pikeville picked up two runs in the fourth inning after CU's starting pitcher Bret DeRooy allowed a single to Zach Nothwehr and a double to Nicolas Gonzalez to score the Bears first run. Gonzalez advanced to third on an errant throw and eventually tied the game on a Cody Chagnon sacrifice fly.

The Tigers answered, though, in the fifth inning and jumped back in front. After Scanlan picked up his second hit of the game, this time of the single variety, Valle and Alex Gutierrez both reached base on base hit bunts and Ricky McColloch grounded into a 6-4-3 double play scoring Scanlan from third.

Pikeville starting pitcher Zak Sutherland went the distance but his pitch count went into the 100s in the eighth inning and Campbellsville took advantage. Sutherland surrendered a walk to pinch hitter Steve Ferraro and Gentry Kinsella reached base on an error by Sutherland.

Torres delivered a single to center field, scoring Ferraro from third base, and two batters later, Kline picked up his second hit and first RBI with a single scoring Kinsella.

Pikeville struck back in the final frame with a Chagnon home run cutting the Tigers' lead to 4-3, but DeRooy picked up two fly ball outs sealing the victory.

DeRooy (4-3) picked up his team-leading fourth complete game of the season and struck out six Pikeville batters.

Sutherland (4-3) is now tied with the Pikeville team lead with three complete games.

Campbellsville and Pikeville will play a double header tomorrow afternoon, starting at 2 p.m. The probable pitching matchups will be Matt Robertson (CU) vs. Corey Gilligan (UPIke) and in game two, Allen Hewey (CU) vs. Joe Valentino (UPike).
