Box Score COLUMBIA, Ky. – It was a defensive battle early, but the game opened up in the final 60 minutes, as Campbellsville University lost 4-1 at No. 3 Lindsey Wilson College Tuesday night. It was the Tigers' first Mid-South Conference loss of the season.
BOX SCORE
"I think the score line doesn't reflect the way the game really went. I think we had some really good chances we didn't finish, and their chances were all really good chances too. I think at times we possessed and owned the game, and at times they did. It wasn't dominating by any means," CU head coach Adam Preston said. "It's not a young team, but I thought we made some young mistakes and making mistakes we should have weeded out years ago. That showed with two goals on missed marks."
Both defenses denied a shot on goal for the first 27 minutes of play until Nedin Zukanovic, assisted by Yazeed Davids, pushed a goal in for the Blue Raiders. Josh Hollis made a diving kick save in the 30th minute to deny LWC a second goal, but Bilal Qsiyer scored off an Aleksi Pahkasalo corner kick to make it 2-0 in the 60th minute.
After falling behind 3-0 in the 65th minute on a goal by Keane McIvor and assisted by Yusuf Ackers, CU began to pressure again.
Samuel Gonzalez was taken down in the box by Qsiyer to award the Tigers a penalty kick in the 70th minute, which Marcello Petit trotted forward and shot past an off balanced keeper, Dalyan Hawes.
Tom Moody added LWC's final goal in the 73rd minute.
Hawes finished with six saves in the win. Hollis had 10 saves for the Tigers.
Preston looks forward to a chance to see LWC again in the Mid-South Conference Tournament, Nov. 13-14 at CU's Finley Stadium and Citizens Bank Field.
"It's early in the season. From here we get better. We fight, work hard and improve and every single day we become a better team. The goal is that at the end of the year, we're playing them for the conference championship on our field," Preston said. "Their field is disastrous. You can't pass on the field, you can't play on the field, it's embarrassing. We want this game on our field."
Campbellsville (6-2, 1-1 MSC) will travel to Oakland City University (Ind.) on Saturday for a 1 p.m. EDT game before hosting Georgetown College Monday night. Â
