FT. WAYNE, Ind. – Campbellsville University finished fourth at the NWCA NAIA National Duals on Saturday, the Tigers' third fourth-place finish in the last five years.
Campbellsville fell 43-3 to No. 2 Southern Oregon University in the semifinals to start the day and then ran into the University of Great Falls in the third-place match, losing 30-12.
CU once again dug an early hole with forfeits at 125 and 141 pounds due following Friday's weigh-ins. Friday, the Tigers were able to rally for wins over Bethany (Kan.) and Midland (Neb.). However, the Tigers' were unable to end the drought against Southern Oregon until the next-to-last match with Nate Knauf winning the 197-pound bought, 3-1, over Ryan McWatters.
In the third-place match, Kyle Terry recorded his third win of the weekend with a 4-2 decision over Great Falls' Kyle Wilson, and then Justin Brown beat UGF's Khaldoon Rashid, 4-2, to cut the deficit to 18-6. CU's only other win though was a forfeit at 197 pounds.
Despite the loses Saturday, the Tigers were pleased to continue their run of Top 5 finishes and were able to get an early look at competition for the NAIA Championships in March.
"We really enjoyed the atmosphere and the tough competition. It was a great experience for our freshmen who competed this weekend," Franky James, CU head coach said. "Justin Brown, Chuck Sharon and L.J. Henderson all competed well and are freshmen who now have a better understanding of how they have to compete at the national level events to get on the podium and lead our team to the top in the future."
Top-ranked Grand View University went on to win the tournament with Southern Oregon finishing second. Lindsey Wilson College finished fifth, University of the Cumberlands was sixth, Indiana Tech was seventh and Missouri Valley was eighth.
Campbellsville (6-2) will open Mid-South Conference duals action Wednesday, Jan. 14 at first-year program St. Catharine College, which is coached by CU alum Spencer Adams.
