FT. WAYNE, Ind. – Campbellsville University wrestling rallied back twice in the first two rounds of the National Wrestling Coaches Association (NWCA) NAIA Multi-Divisional National Duals to Saturday morning's semifinals against second-ranked Southern Oregon University at 11 a.m. ET. The Tigers are guaranteed their sixth Top 5 consecutive finish at the NAIA National Duals.
Campbellsville was forced to forfeit two of its first three weights, 12 total points, in each dual due to wrestlers failing to make weight. CU also lost its 133-pound bought in both of its duals, falling behind by 15 and 16 points, in the respective rounds.
Faced with the early deficit, the Tigers dropped only one of its final seven weights to defeat Bethany University (Kan.), 26-18, and Midland University (Neb.), 30-19.
"It was great to see the guys come together and compete the way we know they can. Coach TJ Moen and the team leaders are doing a great job with this team," Franky James, CU head coach said. "For us to keep our string of Top 5 finishes at National Duals going is a good accomplishment considering we are giving up 12 points."
Kyle Terry scored the first points in each dual, collecting a 1204 major decision against Bethany's Courtney Strauss and pinning Midland's Tyler Willis in the second period. While Shawn McGhee was defeated for the first time at 157 against Bethany, the Tigers scored 22 straight, including pins by Travis McIntosh and Terrell Moore, which clinched the Tigers' win. It was Moore's first heavyweight bought since the 2012-13 season.
Against Midland, Terry's pin was one of six wins by fall for the Tigers. McIntosh dropped the 174-pound match for the only blunder after the early forfeits. Moore's pin against Midland came in 57 seconds, the fastest of the day for the Tigers. He was the only Tiger to win twice by fall.
Campbellsville advances to the National Duals semifinals for only the third time in its 11-year history. The Tigers finished fourth in 2011 and 2013.
The Tigers (6-0) will meet second-ranked Southern Oregon for the first time in a dual setting when they meet in the semifinal at 11 a.m. The winner will face either No. 1 Grand View (Iowa) or No. 5 Great Falls (Mont.) in the championship at 4:30 p.m. The losers of the two duals will meet in the third-place match at 1 p.m.
In the consolation bracket, Missouri Valley College, University of the Cumberlands, Lindsey Wilson College and Indiana Tech are the other four teams remaining of the 16-team tournament.Â
"I think we can wrestle better tomorrow, and if we do, we can make the finals. It would be nice to wrestle Southern Oregon and Grand View guys before the national tournament," James said.
