Tigers, Lady Tiger swimmers qualify for Nationals

SEWANEE, Tenn. — Campbellsville swimming had a spectacular weekend at the third Igloo Invitational at the University of the South in Sewanee. Several Tigers and Lady Tigers qualified for NAIA Nationals with their performances.

"I am so overly excited about the results from this meet," said coach Casey Smith. "Watching so many of my athletes see improvements due to months of hard work is so rewarding."


The men's 200 free relay qualified for Nationals with an "A" cut for the first time since the men's team has been reinstated. The Tigers who swam the relay are freshman, Chris Telman, sophomore, Austin Tucker, junior, Devon Cross and freshman, Eduardo Doilin. The qualifying standard for the NAIA is 1:36.60 and the four Tigers finished in 1:36.09.

"The men's 200 free relay was an amazing way to start off the meet," said Smith. "My guys have been visualizing this race for three years, some of them, and seeing them make the cut was wonderful. That swim set up our whole meet for success and we saw lots of it!"

For the Lady Tigers, Shelby Mattingly and Bailey Foxworth qualified for Nationals. Mattingly qualified with two NAIA "A" cut times in the 50 freestyle and the 100 freestyle. In the 50 freestyle, she finished at 25.22, with a cutoff time of 25.73. In the 100 freestyle, the cut time was 56.32 and Mattingly swam a time of 55.56.

"Shelby's 50 free was another highlight," said Smith. "Seeing the excitement on her face was priceless."

Foxworth qualified for Nationals in the 100 butterfly with a NAIA "A" cut and a NAIA "B" cut in the 500 Freestyle. In the 100 butterfly, Foxworth finished with a time of 1:01.89; the cut time was 1:01.99. With the 500 freestyle, she qualified with a "B" cut time of 5:35.50, with the cutoff at 5:36.70.

Along with the five races that qualified for Nationals, Campbellsville had a 31 career best swims and 20 season best swims on Friday and Saturday, Nov. 20-21. Also, all five Lady Tiger relays saw time improvements in their swims.

"So many of my athletes had great races," said Smith. "Even the ones who didn't see a best time still put forth maximum effort both in the pool and while on the pool deck. I love to watch my team cheer for each other and I am so proud of the support they shared through good races and tough races."


For the women, through 40 events, the Lady Tigers finished fourth with 452.5 points. Sewanee came in first and recorded 895 points, Asbury University took second (688.5), Mars Hill University was third (567) and Bethel finished fifth (254).

The men finished fifth with 217 points. Mars Hill placed first with 947 points, with Asbury following in second (641), Sewanee in third (613) and Bethel in fourth (235).

The Tigers and Lady Tigers will travel to Columbia, Ky. on Friday, Dec. 4 for a double dual meet with Union Collegeand Lindsey Wilson at Lindsey Wilson College. Action will start at 6 p.m. ET.
