INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. — Three Campbellsville wrestlers recorded top 10 finishes at the Midwest Classic Tournament to lead the Tigers to an 18th place finish out of 32 NCAA DII, DIII and NAIA teams.Â
Kyle Terry (157), Sean Black (174) and Chuck Sharon (184) finished in the top 10 of their respective weight classes, as CU recorded 37 team points, 28.5 points coming from those three Tigers.Â
Terry placed fifth and recorded 10 team points. In the quarterfinals, Zebulan Beam of Ashland University won in sudden victory over Terry but the two would meet again in the fifth place match were Terry won by a 7-2 decision.Â
Sharon placed sixth, scoring 10.50 team points. Sharon won round one, two and the quarterfinals by decision, tech fall and sudden victory, respectively. In the fifth-place match, Nick Burghardt of Maryville University won by medical forfeit over Sharon.
Black finished eighth and scored eight team points. After the opening round, Black entered the consolation bracket where he won by a major decision, a fall and a 7-1 decision after he received a bye in consolation round one. In the seventh place match Zak Benitz of Upper Iowa University won by fall over Black.
There were 32 teams to participate in the Midwest Classic, 23 teams were NCAA DII, one was NCAA DIII and eight teams were NAIA. The top five teams to finish were all at the NCAA DII level. No. 1 Maryville University won the tournament recording 121.5 points team points. The Saints had six top five finishes. No. 17 University of Wisconsin-Parkside finished runner-up with 119.5 points, having five wrestlers in the top five.
Rounding out the rest of the top five teams were No. 7 Pittsburgh-Johnstown with 103 points and Upper Iowa University with 103 points, who tied for third. No. 6 Lake Erie College finished fifth with 91 team points.
Five other Mid-South Conference teams competed in the Classic. Sixth-ranked Life Univeristy was the only other team to place higher than CU, finishing 15th with 42.5 points. After Campbellsville's 18th place finish, four MSC teams were to follow: St. Catharine College (23rd, 26.5 points), University of the Cumberlands (24th, 20 points), Brewton-Parker (29th, 3.5 points) and Lindsey Wilson College (30th, 3.0).
The Midwest Classic ended the fall semester for the Tigers. They will return to the mats on Jan. 8-9 for the National Duals in Fort Wayne, Ind.
