BOX SCORE
"In a game like this with two very good basketball teams, it comes down to who's going to make plays. They made plays late and we didn't," CU head coach Keith Adkins said. "Secondly, you're just asking for problems if you're going to turn it over 21 times against teams like Pikeville."
The Bears took advantage of 21 Campbellsville turnovers to score 25 of their 90 points. The points off turnover helped flip the score in the second half, as Pikeville built a 26-5 run to turn a 15-point deficit into a four-point lead, 80-76.
Moments later, a steal and layup by Macari Brooks made it a six-point game, 85-79, with two minutes to play. Brooks, who finished with 18 points in the game, was also the one to give UPike the lead with 5:48 to play - the Bears' first lead in more than 23 minutes of action.Â
CU went more than five minutes without a basket in the final seven minutes of play until D'Von Campbell connected on an and-one play to cut the game to three, 85-82, with 1:39 to play. Campbell finished the game with 33 points, matching his career-high from December in a double overtime win at Philander-Smith.Â
Darius Clement drove to the basket and hit a layup in heavy contact to pull within one, 85-84. Clement was injured on the play. UPike picked Gaines to shoot the free throw for Clement. Robinson rebounded the missed try and put it back to regain the Tigers' lead, 86-85 with a minute left. However, Kenny Manigault answered with his fourth 3-pointer of the half and fifth of the game to finish with 33 points and give Pikeville an 88-86 lead with 34 seconds to play.Â
Jackson Hussey capped the win with a steal and layup with two seconds remaining.Â
The Bears took a 7-0 lead to start the game. Manigault made it an eight-point game, 10-2, when he hit his first 3 of the game. Manigault entered the game with nine 3s all year but knocked down five against Campbellsville to lead UPike with 30 points.Â
CU rallied and tied the game, 15-15, on a Campbell 3. The run continued, turning into a 22-11 Tiger run to give CU an eight-point advantage, 29-21. Campbellsville's lead did not change in the first half, despite Pikeville pulling within four points. Campbell hit a pair of free throws to send the Tigers into the locker room with a 16-point, 50-34, halftime lead. The senior point guard had 20 points at the break.Â
"D'Von was really good. His first half was incredible. The second half started off well, but we rode that horse as long as we could and he got tired. He missed some shots late, which is unfortunate, because you want to see him finish it off," Adkins said.Â
The Tigers connected on 57.7 percent shooting in the first half compared to the Bears' 32.4 percent. CU finished the game shooting 50.9 percent from the floor.
Campbellsville (22-4, 8-3 MSC) will travel to Williamsburg, Ky., Saturday at 4 p.m. EST to meet the University of the Cumberlands.Â
