Box Score WILLIAMSBURG, Ky. — Campbellsville hit a major cold streak late in the second half and University of the Cumberlands finished the game on a 25-8 run to knock off the sixth-ranked Tigers Saturday evening, 73-54.
Â
Â
"We are really inconsistent," said head coach Keith Adkins. "That's been the story of our games here lately and instead of going in spurts, we need to put a full game together."
Â
It's like déjà vu all over again for CU men's basketball. The Tigers came out slow and hit a cold streak half way through the second period to be knocked off for its second straight game.
Â
Cumberlands went up by eight points, 37-29, with 18 minutes left but Quin Richardson and Eric Gaines worked the lead back to four points. The Patriots'Â Xaiver Owens and Chance Armstrong pushed the UC lead back to eight, 41-33.
Â
Elliott Young hit a 3, and another basket by Gaines whittled the lead back to four, 41-38, forcing UC to call a timeout. But the Patriots answered the call from head coach Donnie Butcher and heated up from behind the 3-point line.
Â
UC's D'Lando Carter hit three 3-pointers in a span of three minutes and Tony Bradley added another Patriot triple. Before Adkins knew it his team was down by its largest deficit of the game, 59-47, with 7:19 left.
Â
Carter finished with 14 points and hit four 3s to lead Cumberlands from behind the arc. Xavier Owens led the Patriots with 21 points and Bradley scored 18.
Â
Campbellsville's cold streak continued, going six minutes without a basket from the 10:53 mark to the 4:50 point. During that span the Patriots extended their lead to 21 points to match Campbellsville's largest deficit all season long.
Â
Eric Gaines hit a layup with 10 seconds on the clock to cut the final score to 73-54.
Gaines finished with 12 points to tie D'Von Campbell for the team lead.
Â
"That's been the story of a few games now," said Adkins. "We go in spurts and you can't will the ball in. You have to get repetition in practice and practice hard especially down the stretch late in the season."
Â
Campbellsville came in short handed without senior guard Darius Clement, who was injured Thursday night at Pikeville. Campbell carried the Tigers with all of his 12 points in the first half, but did not see any action in the second period.
Â
"Darius was a second team All-Conference guy for us last year," said Adkins. "He came in this year and has played great for us. He gives up depth at the guard position and takes care of the ball. I was hoping some guys would step up in his absence but they didn't, and we will be searching for the guy next week."
Â
Campbellsville finished hitting only 4-of-20 (20 percent) from 3-point land and 21-of-62 (33.9 percent) overall. CU also struggled from the free throw line hitting 42 percent (8-of-19).
Â
Cumberlands lit it up from the floor hitting 47.5 percent (28-of-59) and knocked down 10-of-31 (32.3 percent) 3-pointers. UC also hit all seven of its free throws. The 10 triples for the Patriots was the difference late in the game.
Â
"It was an embarrassment," said Adkins. "We have to be able to shoot the ball better from 3 and the free throw line. We have to prepare a little better in our pregame because we have not done that very well here lately."
Â
Campbellsville will return to action on Saturday, Feb. 21 as the Tigers travel to St. Catharine College. Tipoff is scheduled for 4 p.m. EST. The game will be broadcast live on the Campbellsville University Sports Network – 88.7 The Tiger.
