Tigers send seniors out with win over Cumberlands

CAMPBELLSVILLE, Ky. – A trio of bonus point wins helped No. 4 Campbellsville beat University of the Cumberlands, 26-15, on Senior Night Friday in Gosser Gym.

After falling behind 5-0 on a tech fall loss at 125 pounds, junior 133-pounder Davion Caston worked his way to a 19-3 tech of 13th-ranked Grant Burkhalter early in the second period.

"I was really happy with Davion. He is going to be better once he gets more weigh-ins," James said. "He looked really good tonight. That's what he looks like in practice, what you saw tonight."

Sam Conners, ranked fifth at 141 pounds, followed with a 10-7 decision and Kyle Terry, ranked fourth at 149, snapped a three-match losing skid with a third-period pin of Landon Burkhalter. Terry was leading 11-4 at the time of the pin.

"It was good to see Kyle attacking. Almost all of his last 10 matches have been close until tonight. He's got to get more aggressive on his feet, and get his attacks going and he did that," James said. "That's why he got the pin. If he hadn't attacked the single-leg and got his offense going, he wouldn't have got the pin."

Senior Terry Harris received the start at 157 – his first home appearance of the semester – but was stuck on bottom in a 10-2 major decision. James said he was pleased to see Harris back on the mat after a month's absence due to illness.

The major pulled Cumberlands within five, 14-9, but LJ Henderson followed with a 5-0 win and senior Marvin Lawrence stuck UC's Sean Bateman in 31 seconds to help seal the dual. Two weights later, Evan Decker officially clinched it with 5-1 win at 197 pounds.

Before the dual, CU honored its five seniors: Conners, Harris, Lawrence, Travis McIntosh and Matt Milton.

"It was a good win for our seniors," James said.

The head coach, now in his 11th season, had three seniors who competed their entire career at CU: Conners, McIntosh and Milton.

"It's good to see Sam Conners make it to the end. It's been a long journey for him. A lot of ups and downs and a long five years," James said. "It's good to see him stick it out, and the same for Travis and Matt Milton, who didn't get to wrestle this year. Matt stuck with us through the year and is going to graduate. I'm proud of those guys sticking it out and making it. I look back at their recruiting classes, and the people they came in with, and there's not a lot of guys who make it all four or five years.

"Travis has been a great leader for us this year. He's made a big difference not just for this team and this year but for future years. All of the leadership he's given this year will be passed on. He's made a real big difference for the program."

Campbellsville finishes its regular season with an 11-4 duals record and 3-2 in the Mid-South Conference. CU will take a week off and return to action Feb. 21 in Fort Wayne, Ind., at the NAIA East Region Qualifier. The Tigers will enter their Top 12 in hopes of qualifying for the NAIA National Championships, which will be March 6-7 in Topeka, Kan.
