Lady Tigers win Silver Bracket at Leadoff Classic

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

COLUMBUS, Ga. — Campbellsville took down the pre-season Nos. 2 and 11 teams today to claim first place in the Silver Bracket of the NFCA/NAIA Leadoff Classic at the South Commons Softball Complex.

The two wins gave the Lady Tigers a 5-1 weekend and a 7-1 overall record heading into this week's Gulf Coast Invitational.

During the three-day Classic, CU defeated three ranked teams and another receiving votes. The only loss came against No. 24 South Carolina Beaufort.

Campbellsville 5, William Carey 3

After getting solo hits in the first, second and third innings, Campbellsville picked up four during a four-run sixth and held on for a 5-3 win over pre-season No. 2 ranked William Carey.

Aided by two Carey errors, CU finally rattled the bat rack when Brianna Scott singled and Haley Szpila's double plated Scott and Kristin Benton, who had reached on an error. Erin Benton singled to score Szpila and a safety by Adrean Jordan plated Benton.

William Carey made it interesting in the top of the seventh when it also had four hits, but only produced two runs off CU starter Victoria Decker. William Carey stranded two runners in the frame.

Decker (3-1) pitched a six hitter and did not walk a batter. She struck out seven.

Campbellsville 9, Belhaven 0

CU continued to hit the ball in Sunday's second game, banging out 11 hits and giving the Lady Tigers 15 hits in their last seven innings.

The majority of the offense came off the bats of freshman Haley Szpila and senior Kristin Benton, both hammering three-run shots over the centerfield fence.

Campbellsville also got a solid start from freshman Neely Quint (4-0) who pitched a two hitter, walking one and striking out three.

Campbellsville took little time, scoring single runs in innings one and two. In the first, Jacqueline Roof scored on a Belhaven error and in the second Roof's single scored Adrean Jordan.

Things went silent for two innings until Szpila's blast in the fifth and Benton's three-run shot in the sixth. Szpila also scored in the sixth on a fielder's choice hit by Jordan.

Roof, K. Benton, Erin Benton and Jordan all had two hits. Brianna Scoot had a double and Rebecca Miller a single.

CU plays Friday, Saturday, Sunday in the Gulf Coast Invitational, Gulf Shores, Ala. The Lady Tigers' first game is Friday at 10 a.m. vs. Auburn University Montgomery.
