Box Score KANSAS CITY, Mo. — (BOX SCORE) It was a tale of two halves for the Campbellsville University Tigers in the second round of NAIA National Championships. Westmont (Calif.) shocked the Tigers and held on in the final minutes to end CU's season, 65-61.
It was the third-straight time a Golden State Athletic Conference team knocked the Tigers out of the running for a national title.
The Tigers hit just five field goals in the second half, going 5-of-22 (22.7 percent) from the floor. The seniors led the charge in their final game with D'Von Campbell scoring 13 points, followed by Darius Clement's 12 and Eric Gaines' 11. Damontre Harris also played in his final game in the maroon and gray, scoring four points.
"Westmont happened to make a couple more shots than we did," said Keith Adkins, the NABC/NAIA Coach of the Year. "I told the guys that if we kept opponents to 65 points and lower we would come out on top and that did not happen tonight."
Campbellsville had a chance late in the game with four seconds on the clock. Elliott Young threw a baseball pass the length of the court to Harris, who called a timeout. Only a half second ran off the clock and Adkins drew up a play that was designed for Campbell.
"We wanted to get a play with a lot of movement," said Adkins. "We had D'Von (Campbell) set a screen then come off of a screen himself to create space."
Young faked right and threw the ball left but the pass was a little to hot for Campbell and ricocheted off his hands out of bounds with 1.4 seconds on the clock. Westmont's Hayden Armstrong hit two free throws to seal the victory and push the Warriors into their first NAIA quarterfinals since 2003.
"That one play did not lose us the game," said Adkins. "We had a few breakdowns on defense and they hit their shots when it mattered."
The Tigers finished hitting 41.7 percent (20-of-48) from the floor after blistering the nets in the first period, knocking down 57.7 percent of their shots. Westmont, though, one-upped Campbellsville and hit 61.5 percent in the first half and finished hitting 49 percent from the floor.
Cory Blau led the charge for the Warriors with 17 points. Daniel Carlin and Gerald Karczewski both finished with 14. The one stat that stood out for Campbellsville on the defensive end was the points in the paint. The Tigers allowed 28 of Westmont's 65 points in the paint, even though CU had the league's best rim protector in Harris.
"Westmont is a great team, and they have a great coach who has a lot of experience. They were just better tonight," said Adkins.
Even though the opening tip came early Saturday morning, it did not take long for both teams to get their legs under them after sitting around all day. The 3-point arc was a hot commodity, with a combined 15 3s made on 43 attempts. Campbellsville led the way, hitting 9-of-24 and Westmont finished hitting, 6-of-19.
The fireworks cooled off late in the game, but Campbellsville had one big play that brought the crowd to its feet in the first half. With 11:36 remaining in the first half, and the Tigers leading 17-16, Elliott Young received a pass at the top of the key and stormed to the goal with a two-handed, posterizing slam over Westmont senior Daniel Carlin. Campbellsville ends its season with a program-best 29 wins and were ranked atop the NAIA DI polls for three-straight weeks to start January 2015. It is the first season CU has claimed both the Mid-South Conference regular season and tournament championships in the same year.
