NASHVILLE, Tenn. — Campbellsville men's and women's cross country took to Percy Warner State Park Saturday morning and came away with impressive times in their opening 5K race. The Tigers finished second in the non-NCAA DI standings with an average time of 16:33 and the Lady Tigers finished third with an average time of 23:07.
Freshmen Julianna Bradley and Bret Crawford led the way for Campbellsville after posting times of 22:31 and 16:09.4, respectively. The time for Crawford placed him in the Top 20 by one-tenth of a second and Bradley finished 66th in the women's race.
Out of the 11 teams that came from different levels (NCAA DI, DII and NAIA), CU finished sixth and the Lady Tigers finished eighth in the combined standings.
The men, who usually run 8Ks, had solid performances. After receiving votes in the NAIA Top 25 for the first time in the coach Hilary Lakes era, the Tigers showed they could compete at a high level.
In addition to Crawford, three other Tigers finished in the Top 50. Senior Joey Hartlage finished 29th with a time of 16:15.7 – one minute off the leaders. Fellow senior Brett Pierce was just nine seconds behind Hartlage with a time of 16:24.3 – good for 35th place. Sophomore Adam Sandidge finished 46th with a time of 16:37.7.
The trio of Hartlage, Pierce and Sandidge return after qualifying for the NAIA championship last season.
Rounding out the Tigers in the 5K were Dylan Ford (69th – 17:14.2), Will Ballard (82nd – 17:42.7), Corbin Harris (85th – 17:56.1), Zach Napier (18.14.4), Ross Allen (98th – 18.38.3), Wade Harris (99th – 18:45.9), Brandon Wiseheart (112th – 20:22.3), and Luke Camp (116th - 21:25.9).
Middle Tennessee State won the men's race with an average time of 15:38.Lipscomb finished second (15:49), Belmont finished third (15:54), Vanderbilt was fourth (16:14), Nashville Harriers finished fifth (16:18), Campbellsville finished sixth (16:33), Western Kentucky finished seventh (16:46), Chattanooga was eighth (16:47), Spalding was ninth (16:58), Lindsey Wilson was 10th (17:22) and Tennessee State was 11th (19:53).
In the women's race, the Lady Tigers had five individuals finish within 18 seconds of each other.
Behind Bradley's 22:31, Brandi Thomas finished with a sub 23-minute 5K (22:59.1), Mallory Vest was just behind her at 23:03.3 and another freshman Elise Shainfeld behind her at 23:11.3. Sophomore Abby Wicke was the final Lady Tiger to finish under 24 minutes at 23:49.3.
Bailey Foxworth finished in 84th place with a time of 25:38.8, Jessica Cook finished in 87th with a time of 26:20.2 and Katelyn Chalk was behind them at 34:06.6.
Maggie Calvert, who is one of the top returning seniors for the Lady Tigers, was scheduled to race but did not start due to an injury.
The women's team standings - First place, Lipscomb (17:47); Second, Vanderbilt (17:59); third, Belmont (18:37); fourth, Chattagnooga (18:48); fifth, University Alabama Birmingham (20:38); sixth, Lindsey Wilson (21:36); seventh, Spalding (22:26); eighth, Campbellsville (22:26); ninth, Tennessee State (23:31).
Campbellsville will have three weeks off before getting their first look at Phil Moore Park in Bowling Green, Ky. on Sept. 26. Both Phil Moore Park and Bowling Green have partnered with the Mid-South Conference as the host site of the MSC championship that will take place on Nov. 7.
