FORT WAYNE, Ind. — Day one of the Wrestling Coaching Association National Duals is in the books for Campbellsville men's wrestling and the Tigers are sitting pretty with two key wins over ranked opponents.
The fifth-ranked Tigers took down No. 18 Williams Baptist and No. 6 Life University in consecutive duals to move into tomorrow's match against the four-time NAIA national champion and No. 1-ranked Grand View. That dual will start at approximately 11 a.m. ET on Mat 5.
"The team has earned the opportunity to take on the four-time national champion Grand View," said CU coach Franky James. "We hosted Life University at our duals in November and the score was very close. Today, we had to forfeit at 197 and still beat them pretty handily. That shows how hard the guys are working and the improvement from top to bottom."
Campbellsville locks up at least a Top 4 finish and is the only team in the country to finish in the Top 5 every year since 2009.
The Tigers went 15-7 overall against Williams Baptist and Life – with two of those losses coming via a forfeit in the 197-weight class.
Campbellsville had four grapplers go undefeated on day one of the NWCA National Duals. Davion Caston, reigning national champion and No. 1 ranked wrestler at 133-pounds, pinned Jaitlan Pitt of Williams Baptist in 1:34 then recorded a tech-fall over Quintni Noel of Life, 16-1.
At 157, Kyle Terry pinned Jonathan Stewart (Williams Baptist) in 5:55 and then had a 7-2 decision over Rowdy Prior (Life).
In the 164-pound weight class, Sean Black finished with a 15-5Â major decision over Ryan Whittle (Williams Baptist)Â and a 3-1 decision over No. 15 Tyler Button (Life).
Lastly, Justin Brown dominated the 174-pound class by defeating Connor Linehan (Williams Baptist), 7-2, then pinning Hunter Smith (Life) in 4:09.
