CAMPBELLSVILLE, Ky. — Tiger wrestling hosted the Campbellsville Duals this afternoon and finished the day with a 2-2 record overall.
The 18
th-ranked Tigers (5-2, 2-1 MSC) started with a 27-14 victory over Belmont Abbey but dropped two straight duals to Mid-South Conference foe No. 17 University of the Cumberlands (25-10) and No. 2 Indiana Tech (18-15). CU then finished the day with a 28-12 victory over Brewton-Parker College.
Chuck Sharon, the sixth-ranked grappler at 184 lbs., led the Tigers with a perfect 4-0 record on the day. In addition, No. 11 Adrian Campasano won both of his matches at 125 lbs. and
Jayce Carr won a pair at 141 lbs.
Campbellsville 27, Belmont Abbey 14
The Tigers won seven of the 10 duals and took an early 13-0 lead over Belmont Abbey with three decisions by
Michael Beets,
Aaron Rugnao and Carr, and a major decision by
David Sparks. The Crusaders came right back, though, and brought the score to 13-11 with a pair of victories at 157 and 165.
But CU earned 11-straight points after a 3-0 decision by
Justin Brown, tech fall by Sharon and
Evan Decker earned six points for a forfeit at 197 to seal the dual.
Cumberlands 25, Campbellsville 10
Cumberlands flipped the switch on Campbellsville in the second dual, winning six of the 10 matches.
Composano started the match with a 16-3 major decision but Cumberlands won the next three to take a 12-4 lead. At 157 lbs.
Michael Diemer pulled an upset, 5-4, over No. 8 Tristan Macri and was followed with decisions by
Justin Brown and
Chuck Sharon cutting the UC lead to eight, 18-10.
The Patriots ended any chance of a comeback, though, as No. 8 Ramsey Bloy won a major decision over Decker (10-2) and Quandre Chisolm defeated
Terrell Moore at 285 lbs. (3-2).
Indiana Tech 18, Campbellsville 15
The Warriors came in with a team-high 11 grapplers ranked in their respective weight classes. Camposano once again started the Tigers out with a win over No. 5 Sawyer Miller and was followed with a 3-2 win by freshman
Kolten Radaz over No. 9 Enrique Early.
No. 8 Matthew Miller defeated
Angel Vasquez (8-4) and Robert Humphrey picked up a late win over
David Sparks (14-10).
Diemer put Campbellsville ahead for the final time, 9-6, with an 8-6 decision over No. 10 Jacob Gross. But Indiana Tech's John Weldon (No. 5) and Antonio Rodriguez (No. 10) earned a pair of decisions to give the Warriors a 12-9 lead.
Sharon pulled the dual back to 12-all with a win over No. 11 Dillon Francisco but Trevor Yank pinned Decker in 1:42 for the decisive victory. CU needed a pin to knot the match at 18 but
Terrell Moore earned a 7-3 decision over Oscar Martinez for three CU dual-points.
Campbellsville 28, Brewton Parker 12
In the final dual of the day, Campbellsville had to rally in the later matches to pull the win. Trailing 12-9 after the 157-pound match, CU won five straight matches to seal the victory.
Brandon Pledger started the rally with a 10-3 decision and was followed with a major decision by Brown. Sharon brought the crowd to its feet late with an impressive pin in 12 seconds and was followed with decisions by Decker and
Nate Jackson.
Campbellsville now travels to the Reinhardt Duals in Canton, Ga. on Nov. 30.
