KINGSPORT, Tenn. — Campbellsville continued to tack on personal-best times as the Mid-South Conference Swim Meet concluded tonight at the Kingsport Aquatic Center.
Sixteen season-best times fell by the wayside during the morning preliminary heats as 12 CU swimmers qualified for the final or the consolation. In the finals, 14 more times were retired by new marks. Seventy-eight season-best times were posted over the three days of competition.
Shelby Mattingly and Katy Lewis led the way today for the women, qualifying for the final in the 200 freestyle and 200 butterfly, respectively. Mattingly garnered a fourth-place finish good for 11 points and K. Lewis finished sixth, good for nine points.
The Lady Tigers held off Life University for fourth place, defeating the Eagles 219-208. University of the Cumberlands won the women's championship with 486 points.
The men, who finished fifth out of six teams, qualified another event by setting a national-standard time in the 200-medley relay.
"There's something about a preliminary/finals format that gets the adrenaline flowing," said coach Casey Smith. "This is the only meet this year for which we've done a specific taper."
Smith said she and assistant Patrick Sonsteng had been training the team hard during the month of January before easing off a bit prior to the conference meet.
"I think our success and improvement proves to them that what we were doing is right," continued Smith. "I think they'll trust us more as we go forward."
She said they'd get right back to logging some distances next week in an effort to prepare for nationals.
Consolation finalists included: Katie Miller and Jessica Cook, women's 200 backstroke; Alex Meade, men's 200 backstroke; Maria Archila and Elise Shainfeld, women's 200 freestyle; Christophe Telman, men's 200 freestyle; Emily Hunter, women's 200 breaststroke; Devon Cross, men's 200 breaststroke, and Austin Tucker, men's 200 butterfly.
