GULF SHORES, Ala. — Campbellsville beat the Nos. 9 and 21 teams today at the Gulf Coast Invitational and secured a 4-0 start to the three-day southern swing.
Â
Consecutive two-game sweeps yesterday and today secured the Lady Tigers of one of their best starts ever at the early-season Alabama softball showcase. Today CU shutout No. 9 William Carey, 2-0, and then came from behind to outlast No. 21 Georgia Gwinnett, 7-4.
GAME 1: Campbellsville 2, William Carey 0Â
Goose eggs dotted the scoreboard for most of this game, but a two-run homer by Brianna Scott and a two-hit pitching gem from Victoria Decker helped Campbellsville (8-4) to a 2-0 win over William Carey (6-7).
Scott's homer came in the top of the first with Jacqueline Roof aboard after Roof opened the inning with a single.
Decker (4-3) stranded three in her seven innings of work. She walked one and did not strike a batter.
William Carey's Hannah Moak wasn't bad in the circle either. Moak allowed only the two first-inning hits and walked two. She struck out three. Campbellsville did not strand a batter.
GAME 2: Campbellsville 7, Georgia Gwinnett 4
Campbellsville fell behind 3-0 in the first inning and then used a five-run third and insurance runs in the fifth and seventh innings to win, 7-4.
Neely Quint (5-1) went 3 1/3, seeing relief from Victoria Decker after Tori Heinemann reached base in the bottom of the fourth on an error at third base. Quint relinquished five hits and struck out one. Decker, who picked up her first save of the season, gave up four hits and struck out two in the circle.
Jacqueline Roof, Rebecca Miller, Adrean Jordan, Hailey Szpila (2 RBIs), Markie Smith (2 RBIs) and Madison Mudd all had two-hit games in the Lady Tigers' 15-hit attack. Shelby Ray, Brianna Scott and Destiney Taul rounded out the hitting for CU.
In the third inning, CU sent 10 batters to the plate with the big blow coming off the bat of Smith who plated a couple of runs with a single.
In the fifth, Mudd hit a leadoff single and later scored when a pitch hit Szpila with the bases loaded.
The seventh run was the product of another Szpila single, scoring Scott who had led off the inning with a double.
The Lady Tigers stranded 15 runners, Georgia Gwinnett nine.
