Lady Tigers take down UPIKE, Tigers upset on the road

Box Score

PIKEVILLE, Ky. – After a frustrating weekend of rainouts, the Lady Tigers were finally able to scratch out a Mid-South Conference win over University of Pikeville today.

The Lady Tigers (4-9, 2-3 MSC) won 8-1 over the Bears, while the Tigers (9-6, 4-2 MSC) dropped their match against Pikeville, 5-4.

Bolor Enkhbayar and Grace-Laura Rowe battled Pikeville's Macarena Acuna and Thais Bezerra for the top doubles spot. They went to extra sets and CU pulled ahead to win, 9-7. The Australian duo of Jade Letheby and Majella Nobile made easy work of their doubles match, taking it 8-1. CU won the third doubles match by default.

The lone Pikeville win was credited to Acuna, as she dished Enkhbayar a tight 3-6, 6-2 (10-9) loss in No. 1 singles. Rowe and Sarah Coffman blanked their competitors in the three and five spots, respectively, while Nobile got a win at No. 2, defeating Bezerra 6-0, 6-2. Letheby took down Cailee Marcum in twin sets, 6-2, 6-2.

CU picked up another default win in the sixth spot to complete the match.

The Tigers found a very balanced matchup in the Pikeville men's squad. The pairs of Vladyslav Ladygin/Zach Baulch and Adrian Sabrojo/Viktor Ahlbeck fell in No. 1 and No. 2 singles, both 8-6 losses. But CU gained momentum with a victory in the third spot. Alejandro Soriano and Eduardo Mendoza combined against Pablo Casas and Fernando Fernandez in an 8-4 win.

Campbellsville continued with two more wins in the first two singles matches. Ladygin defeated Jan Kappes 6-2, 6-1, and Soriano took Enzo Douillac to extra sets beating him, 6-2, 7-5.

Pikeville struck back, using Casas to knock off Soriano, 6-0, 6-4 in the third. Ahlbeck took down Fernandez in the No. 4 match (6-2, 6-3), but that would be CU's last point. UPIKE took the last two singles matches to win the day and hand the Tigers just their second MSC loss.

Tiger and Lady Tiger Tennis will have another short turnaround as it will host matches at the Kelly Hall Tennis Complex on Monday and Tuesday, April 11-12. The action begins tomorrow with matches against Union College, with first serves set for 2 p.m. ET.
