WILLIAMSBURG, Ky. – Campbellsville tennis went down today at the University of the Cumberlands in two tough Mid-South conference matchups. The 18th-ranked Tigers (9-7, 3-3 MSC) took the 5-4 loss to the Patriots, while the Lady Tigers (6-10, 3-4 MSC) could not hold on, dropping the match 7-2.
No. 7 Isabella Dale proved a problem for Bolor Enkhbayar in No. 1 singles, defeating Enkhbayar 6-0, 6-1. However, with the help of Grace-Laura Rowe, the CU pair got the No. 1 doubles win, 8-1, over Dale and Marie Bozeman.
Majella Nobile and Jade Letheby put up a good fight in the second doubles match, but lost in a close battle, 9-8. Cumberlands would take the third doubles win as well.
Rowe was the only Lady Tiger to win individually. She defeated Sydni Grimes in No. 3 singles in a tiebreak set, 6-4, 2-6 (10-3). Letheby fought for the No. 4 singles victory, coming up short in two sets of 6-1 and 7-5.
Elizabeth Boik and Sara Coffman saw action against the Patriots both as a doubles pair and individually, but could not match UC's intensity. The Patriots move to 11-9, and 4-3 in the MSC.
The Tigers dropped their third Mid-South contest today after getting swept in doubles play. Vladyslav Ladygin and Zach Baulch were knocked off, 8-4, by Ariez Heshaam and Daniel Fraser. The pair of Adrian Sabrojo and Viktor Ahlbeck was defeated in the first of several tight battles, losing 9-7.
The Patriots ousted Alejandro Soriano and Eduardo Mendoza to finish the sweep in No. 3 doubles.
Soriano was able to avenge his doubles loss with a tight No. 2 singles victory over Daniel Butcher, 6-4, 4-6, 6-4. Campbellsville also used Sabrojo (6-2, 4-6, 6-2), Ahlbeck (6-1, 6-4), and Mendoza (6-4, 3-0) for singles wins.
No. 10 Ladygin was upset by Heshaam in the No. 1 spot, and Johan Fuzellier dropped his No. 5 match to Aatu Merenheimo, leaving the Tigers with four points to the Patriots' five. Cumberlands, which is receiving votes in the NAIA, moves to a 12-6 regular season record, 4-2 MSC.
Campbellsville tennis has one more match to fine-tune before entering the Mid-South Conference Tournament next week. CU will play Brescia on Sunday, April 17, at St. Catharine College with first serve scheduled for 2 p.m.
