Lady Tigers need extra innings to sweep Pikeville

PIKEVILLE, Ky. — Campbellsville needed some late-game heroics from Destiney Taul, Markie Smith and Adrean Jordan to extend its win streak to 12 games, but did so today in a sweep of University of Pikeville, 9-2, 5-4, at Paul Butcher Field.

After winning the first game 9-2, the Lady Tigers (28-7, 13-1 MSC) found themselves trailing 4-3 going into the top of the seventh of the doubleheader finale. That's when Taul squeezed home Kalin Bottoms to tie it and then CU used a single by Hailey Szpila in the 11th to score Shelby Ray from third base for the winning run.

But with Pikeville's Lindsey Floyd on third base with one out in the bottom half of the inning, Holly Hinkle flied out to left and Floyd was gunned down on a throw to the plate from Jordan to end the game. Even though the throw was on target, Smith had to make an incredible tag at the plate to seal the victory.

GAME 1: Campbellsville 9, Pikeville 2

Victoria Decker (15-4) picked up two wins on the day, throwing six innings of six-hit ball in the 9-2 win and five innings of scoreless ball in the 5-4 come-from-behind victory.

Morgan Gailor pitched an inning of scoreless ball in the first game and then pitched 3 1/3 innings of one-hit ball in relief of Neely Quint (13-3), who did not earn a decision.

The Lady Tigers got six of their nine runs off the bats of Jacqueline Roof and Madison Mudd, both of whom had three-run homers. Mudd's shot came in the second inning with Adrean Jordan and Destiney Taul aboard. Roof cleared the fence in the fourth with Brittany Rippy and Mudd on base.

Pikeville scored twice in the third, but CU picked up one run in both the sixth and seventh innings.

Shelby Ray's fly-ball scored Taul in the sixth, and Adrean Jordan doubled after Hailey Szpila reached on an error to lead off the seventh inning.

GAME 2: Campbellsville 5, Pikeville 4

Neely Quint (13-3) only lasted 2 2/3 innings after allowing seven hits, but her teammates had her back. Morgan Gailor and Victoria Decker combined for 8 1/3 innings of scoreless ball while Campbellsville figured out a way to make a comeback.

Markie Smith's double in the first gave CU a 2-0 lead. The Lady Tigers would not score again until the sixth while Pikeville tied the game in the second and went ahead 4-2 with runs in the third and fourth.

Shelby Ray squeezed home Brittany Rippy in the sixth to pull CU to within one, 4-3. Then Destiney Taul did the same thing in the top of the seventh. Taul did not have a hit in the game, but her bunt proved to be monumental score Bottoms from third.

With Ray on second in the top of the 11th due to the International Tie Breaker, Szpila's single proved to be the game winner.

Roof and Smith both led CU at the plate going 2-for-5.

Campbellsville stays on the road Sunday, April 3 when the Lady Tigers meet Pikeville in a 1 p.m. Mid-South Conference doubleheader.
