Box Score BOWLING GREEN, Ky. – Campbellsville swept all three doubles matches to set the tone of how the opening round of the Mid-South Conference Tournament would go, winning 5-2 over No. 23 Cumberland University.
No. 18 Campbellsville (11-7) now advances to take on No. 7 Lindsey Wilson College on Sunday at 10 a.m. ET in the semifinal match.
CU started quickly in doubles, with Adrian Sobrojo and Victor Ahlbeck breaking Anatoliy Lashkul and Alejandro Rosas Garcia at No. 2 twice in the first three games. Â
Vladyslav Ladygin and Zach Baulch broke in the fourth and sixth games at No. 1 and Soriano and Alex Spalding picked up a break in the first game at No. 3.
Ladygin-Baulch and Sabrojo-Ahlbeck never let the Phoenix into their matches, with each Campbellsville duo breaking four times. Ladygin-Baulch defeated Thiago Lopes and Axel Lucich, 8-4, at No. 1 and Sabrojo-Ahlbeck won by the same score at No. 2 against Lashkul and Rosas Garcia.
Tshirkin and Ortega Vela broke back to even the third match at three, but the Cumberland duo was broken right back by Soriano-Spalding. The Tigers broke again at 4-6 and outlasted Cumberland, 8-6, to give Campbellsville a 3-0 lead in the match after doubles.
The lead quickly went to 4-0 when Ladygin made quick work of Lashkul at No. 1 singles, 6-1, 6-0, but the remaining five matches were a little closer than the Tigers have liked.
Tshirkin got the Phoenix on the board with a 6-0, 6-1, victory at No. 5 over Eduardo Mendoza, and Ortega Vela outlasted Spalding, 7-5, 6-4, at No. 6.
Soriano led 5-2 in the first set against Lopes at No. 2 but lost the next five games. The sophomore came back to win the final two sets, 6-0, 6-1, including the final three games after Lopes injured his left ankle approaching the net.
Sabrojo took the first set from Rosas Garcia, 6-4, at No. 3, but dropped the second set, 6-2. He broke early in the third set and served for the match at 5-2, but was broken and did not finish.
Ahlbeck squeaked out the first set at No. 4 versus Lucich, winning the tiebreaker, 7-5, but Lucich won the second set, 6-2. The duo had just started the final set when the match ended.
