Campbellsville University picked up another Mid-South Conference Coach of the Year and Freshman of the Year pair of honors Wednesday, as women's soccer head coach Thom Jones and goalkeeper Brandie Hagerman received the respective awards at the MSC Tournament breakfast. 



Hagerman, a native of Hartford, Ky., helped lead CU to a record 10 shutouts this season, collecting seven as the only goalkeeper. She was second in the Mid-South Conference in goals allowed averaged (0.85/game) and entered the MSC semifinal Wednesday with 105 saves in 19 games.

"She's had a great year as a freshman coming in," Jones said. "She's going to be a stud. We just have to work out some little things here and there. Most of our losses were one goal loses, and that's never happened before."

The record number of shutouts, as well as tying the school record for wins (12) and setting a regular season record for wins (11), Jones was dubbed the top coach in the MSC for 2010.

"It's mostly recognition of our program," Jones said. "This year we lost to Cumberlands in overtime by one, lost to Georgetown by one and lost to Lindsey 3-0. Our program is starting to get respect, and it shows with me being given this award."

This is the second sport in 2010 for CU to receive the Coach of the Year and Freshman of the Year, as Amy Eckenfels and Audrey Sanders took home the honors, respectively, for volleyball.

The women's soccer Player of the Year Award for the conference went to Ida Gregersen of Lindsey Wilson College, who had nine goals and nine assists for the No. 10-ranked Blue Raiders entering Wednesday's game against Campbellsville.

Joining Hagerman on the MSC All-Conference team are freshman defender Savannah Stephens of Louisville, Ky., and Megan Campbell of Central City, Ky. Campbell led CU in scoring with 13 goals during the season, scoring all 13 in the final eight games of the regular season.

Other All-Conference selections were forwardsJamie Roberts and Courtney Hamm from University of the Cumberlands, midfielders Tiffany Miller (Cumberlands), Mia Persson (Lindsey Wilson), Chelsea Farley (Georgetown) and Kelley Bowles (Shawnee State). Four defenders join Stephens: Lindsey Wilson's Elisha Fry, Samantha Gutierrez and Patricia Nielsen and Cumberlands' Katie Hefelfinger.

The all-conference team was nominated and voted on by the MSC coaches. Coaches are not allowed to vote for their own players.

Those student-athletes that were selected honorable mention all-conference include: Campbellsville's Audra Hockenberger and Kelsey Mandel; Georgetown's Alessandra Jansen, Samantha Owens and Liz Yoder; Lindsey Wilson's Caitlin Burke, Hanna Jonsson and Heini Metsola; Pikeville College's Ashley Crutcher; Shawnee State University's Brittney Brooks, Marie-Elana Kennedy, Stephanie Rhoads and Katherine Westendorf; and St. Catharine College's Emily Caras, Paola Martinez and Krista Russell.

University of the Cumberlands' Meghan Swope was named the MSC Women's Soccer Champions of Character recipient. Swope earned the award -- as voted on by the conference athletics director -- for her civic and servant leadership within the campus and community.

Forty-six women's soccer student-athletes were recognized as Academic All Mid-South Conference. The distinction is reserved for student-athletes with a sophomore or higher class standing and a 3.25 and above grade point average on a 4.0 scale.
